Chapter 28

Dennis DaVanni met Suel and Dillon at the Hole in the Wall, a pub alongside Phoenix Park on Blackhorse Avenue, not too far from the Special Branch office. It was a pleasant, early fall evening, and they were seated at a table outside on the patio.

Dillon gave a wave as DaVanni stepped out of his Volkswagen Golf and looked around. “Get you guys something?” DaVanni asked when he saw their nearly empty pint glasses.

“I’ll take another Guinness,” Dillon said.

“Same, and thank you,” Suel replied.

DaVanni placed the order and was back at the table. “It cost extra, but I’m having them delivered,” he said as he took a seat.

Suel laughed and said, “Yeah, right.”

“Dennis, you remember Paddy Suel,” Dillon said.

DaVanni and Suel shook hands. “So you said things didn’t go exactly as planned this afternoon.”

“That’s an understatement,” Dillon said and went on to give a more in-depth explanation.

When he had finished, DaVanni was quiet for a moment. He took a couple swallows of Guinness and then said, “Where do you think the leak came from?”

Suel looked at Dillon and nodded. Dillon went on to explain their suspicions regarding DI Horace Tevlin. He finished with, “I’m not sure what this is going to do as far as the delivery of the stolen artwork.”

“I’m not sure either, so let’s take the best scenario,” DaVanni said.

“You mean there is one, a best one?” Suel said.

DaVanni nodded. “Whoever or however they got these paintings, there’s been an awful lot of time and probably money involved. I still think Russians, specifically this Pavel Krupin person, is involved. I expect information on him sometime soon. But here’s the deal. Money, and lots of it, will change hands when the artwork is delivered. Also, the young Russian man who’s been with Aidan’s son will be free to leave.”

“Except that there’s an alert out on him,” Dillon said.

“Believe me. They can deal with that. A boat, a helicopter, a private plane across the channel to Scotland, and he’s essentially free. What this has done is ensure that the arrival of the Rothko paintings is not going to occur at the Phalen home. It will be somewhere else, and if we can follow Phalen, I believe he’ll eventually lead us to the paintings and to the two criminals who escaped arrest earlier today.”

“What are you thinking, we have a stake out at the end of the street, and when Aidan Phalen drives off, we follow him?”

“That’s one way, or we could place one of these on his car and track him,” DaVanni said and pulled a small brown paper bag from his pocket. He reached in and took out three small black plastic boxes. Each one an inch by an inch-and-a-half. “Here you go, magnetic, good for one-hundred-and-eighty-six hours before they need to be recharged. You can attach it to the exterior, in a wheel well or to the chassis, and you can track the vehicle using your cellphone.”

“Where’d you get these?” Dillon asked.

DaVanni smiled and said, “I ordered them online.
