Chapter Seven
Lonnie groaned when he moved his head and pain shot from the back of it to his forehead. He had a killer headache, and he was pretty sure he had a goose egg where heâd been hit.
âOkay, youâre waking up. Thank fuck,â a voice said.
Lonnie frowned. Was that the guy whoâd attacked him?
âCan you open your eyes?â the man asked. âI didn't mean to hurt you. I mean, you were the one who knocked yourself out. I would never have done something like that, I swear.â
Lonnie screwed his eyes close when he tried to move again. He did vaguely remember the tree coming toward him, or rather, him falling toward the tree. This guy might not have been the one whoâd knocked Lonnie out, but he had been trying to kidnap him as far as Lonnie knew.
âHere, let me help you,â the man said, and an arm wrapped around Lonnieâs shoulders, pulling him into a sitting position.
âScoot backward a bit so you can lean against the wall, okay?â the man said once Lonnie was up.
Lonnie obeyed. He didn't think he was up to doing anything else, and he still hadnât looked around. There was no way he was getting away easily, or quickly. He felt like shitt, and that was enough for him to know he wouldnât get far if he tried running. He wasnât even sure heâd manage to pull himself up to his feet right now.
âThere. How are you feeling? I bet you have a headache. Iâd offer you some painkillers, but I donât have any.â
God, the guy was making Lonnieâs headache worse. Why didnât he shut up? Were all kidnappers this chatty?
Lonnie slowly opened his eyes, ready to slam them shut if there was too much light in the room, but to his surprise, it was dark, almost completely.
It wasnât the only thing that surprised him.
He was sitting on the floor, and his kidnapper was kneeling in front of him, his face screwed in a worried expression. He looked young, too young to go around kidnapping people.
Lonnie started shaking his head but remembered it would hurt in time. He looked around the room instead. âWhere are we?â
The guyâs eyes widened. âOh, I thought you were in too much pain to talk.â
Lonnie resisted the urge to roll his eyes. âIâm not. Where are we and why did you kidnap me?â
The guyâhe couldnât be more than nineteen or eighteen, and from what Lonnie could smell over the stench of mold and dust, he was a wolf shifterâbit his lower lip. âI didn't kidnap you.â
âOh? And what do you call assaulting a guy you donât know in the woods, telling him you need him and that youâll hurt him if he doesnât come with you, and knocking him out when he tries to fight you off?â
âI didn't knock you out!â
Lonnie waved the guyâs words away. âWhatever.â
The guyâs expression was stubborn. âI didn't kidnap you. I⦠temporarily misplaced you.â
Lonnie barked out a laugh and instantly winced. Bad idea. He probably shouldnât do anything that implied moving his head.
