It took a while to convince Strazio, the carabiniere from the Fiumicello di Maratea station who responded to the countess’s call, that it was not a hoax. He laughed out loud on hearing her theory about the ghost, thanking the woman for keeping him amused during his long night shift. It was only when the countess had repeated her name and threatened to get him fired that Strazio decided he’d better ask a superior officer what to do.

He didn’t dare call the maresciallo. Unless it was a politician or someone equally influential on the phone, he didn’t appreciate being disturbed during the night. As Mangiaboschi had never mentioned a countess being on his list of favoured people, Strazio decided he was safer calling Brigadiere Rossi and letting him decide what to do next.

The brigadiere wasn’t greatly pleased to be called in the middle of the night either, but his displeasure was nowhere near as bad as Maresciallo Mangiaboschi’s would have been. And he had a sense of humour.

“Why don’t you go over and tell the ghost to wait until the morning to play his pranks?” Paolo Rossi said once he’d woken up enough to start to tease his colleague.

“I’m at the Centralino, I can’t leave the station.”

“Ask the ghost to put in a good word for you.”

“I don’t think the maresciallo would appreciate it coming from a Saracen pirate.” This sentence was pronounced in all seriousness. There was a limit to Strazio’s sense of humour.

“If the ghost has gone, what’s the point of visiting the countess now? Tell her we’ll come by in the morning.”

“She won’t be happy,” Strazio replied.

“Tell her if we go now, we won’t be able to see much in the darkness. In the morning, we can go through the whole place more thoroughly.”

“What if they’re in danger?”

“If they were in danger, the ghost would have attacked them before they had the chance to call us. They will be OK.”

As Paolo ended the call, Strazio remembered that the next day, the carabinieri would be busy with the procession. He wouldn’t have time to visit the countess; he’d have to make the appointment for Friday instead. He just hoped the aristocrat wouldn’t be too furious.
