Theresa peeked out from her hiding place behind a tree. She cursed and quickly hid once more. The three had been moving at full speed for hours, and, just as she was starting to give up hope, theyâd hit the jackpot. Peeking out once more, she got a good look at the harpy perched in one of the nearby trees.
She was smaller than a hunter, and, unlike their bloody feathers, she had cloudy white plumage, mixed with traces of sky blue. She was thin, with a long face, but large, wide eyes. In fact, in the ten minutes Theresa had been spying on her, she hadnât once blinked. In her little hands, she held a bow, arrow nocked and ready to fly at a momentâs notice. Her small talons clutched to the branch, digging just into the bark to keep her steady.
âA scoutâ¦â Theresa mouthed, glancing over to where Seamus and Garrett were hidden. The former nodded, while the latter seemed unfazed. Scouts werenât known for trailing far from the den. Given their position as the watch-women of the clan, the truth was obvious. Theyâd found the den.
Theresa closed her eyes, going over what they knew. The den was in the side of a massive hill, and went down several hundred yards. There were likely fifteen to twenty entrances, with most of them being along the top. If their habits hadnât changed much, there would be two waste disposal exits near the bottom. The Queenâs chamber would be near the top, if not at the summit of the mountain. The prisons would be near the waste disposal chambers, though not so close that an escaped prisoner could easily slip out.
She opened her eyes and peeked out again. Now that she was sure it was the den, Theresa was able to make out two more scouts, within several hundred yards of the first. If any one of them caught wind of trouble, theyâd all know in seconds and the entire den would be poised to attack. She glanced over to Seamus and Garrett.
Seamus gave her a sign, reminding her that magic was out of the question. No doubt, scouts had incredible senses, even amongst harpies. They would smell the tinge of magic, or see the flash of light as soon as they tried an incantation.
Garrett motioned toward the eastern side, holding up four fingers. Theresa glanced along the eastern side and nodded. There was only one scout guarding that side. Even from her vantage, she could spot four obvious entrances. Two hidden behind branches growing from the side of the hill. Another open to the light, but high up on the side. Their best bet was the fourth entrance. It was low enough that they could slip in without needing to fly. And, judging by the scoutâs angle, it was likely just out of her line of sight unless she decided to check on it.
With a gesture, Theresa began to make her way toward the eastern side of the hill.
