What about disease?

During the time period before your puppy’s immunity has taken full effect, you may be worried about your puppy being exposed to disease. We have looked at this in some detail in Part One. The compromise that most puppy owners adopt is to carry the puppy around until he is fully protected by his vaccinations. Putting the dog in a large shoulder bag like the one pictured opposite can be a great solution.

No one can tell you what you should do with your puppy, and with some very large-breed dogs, taking them everywhere in your arms, or even in a bag, is impractical if not impossible. You may feel that you must take the risk and place the dog on the ground before the vaccination process is complete. In this case, it is important to avoid ground that is highly likely to be contaminated. This will include any areas that are popular with local dog walkers.
