Chapter Seventeen
âAre you seriously kidding me with that pack?â I demanded fifteen minutes later, staring at Simon with genuine dismay as he stood in the middle of the lobby of Justice Hall next to a backpack almost as tall as he was, its contents spread out on the floor. âI didnât expect you to pack for a European tour.â
âWhat?â Simon protested. Behind him, Brody sat on the couch, enjoying the show with a cup of Mrs. Frenchâs tea. âWe need this stuff. Iâve got collection tubes and a digitizing scanner and two separate laptops in case one gets deep-sixed, one of which has access to the Arcana Councilâs network no matter where we go.â
My mind, of course, went immediately to the In Between. I didnât think weâd have much in the way of hot spots there. âNo matter where?â
âThatâs what Iâm going to test out.â Simon nodded enthusiastically, already refilling his pack. I handed him Mrs. Frenchâs folder for good measure. âIf we can get computer access In Between, we can begin to understand what it really is. What its chemical composition is, whether or not people can surviveâeven people we thought were deadâand whether or not this is simply a new and improved way to breach the veil. Itâs important stuff. Your dad dropped off the mother of all maps on me, and I havenât had time to digitize that bastard, so thatâs in here too.â
I narrowed my eyes. Willem of Galt, or the Hermit, hadnât made an appearance at Armaeusâs Council meeting, but that was to be expected. His job was to protect the veil between Earth and the outside plane where the gods still roamed.
âYou actually saw him? How's he doing?â And more to the point, how long was my own father going to continue to ignore me?
âHe didnât drop it, drop it. Like, not in person. It was just waiting for me when I got back home from the Council meeting. Sitting right there in the lobby of the Bellagio, addressed to me. Once I opened it up, I was seriously jacked.â
I frowned, and Brody and I exchanged a look. Even Mrs. French sniffed with concern.
âYouâre sure itâs from the Hermit? It couldnât have been someone else trying to mislead you?â I pressed.
âTotally not that,â Simon said, his words absolute. âI may look young, but Iâm not an idiot, you guys. This map is the real deal.â
âOkay, well, good.â I sighed. âNext question: How well do you know Trinity College?â
âAre you kidding? I love that place. I was there just last summer to do some research for Armaeus, and itâs incredible. I canât believe youâve never been there.â
âIâve been there, itâs just been a while.â Iâd logged some major Google Earth time in Brodyâs car to jog my memory, but this particular trip was definitely going to test the boundaries of my need to know where it was I was going. âYouâre going to have to have a real specific picture in your head for this to work.
