Chapter 16

-David-

It had been twenty-four hours since the unfortunate pigeon incident. The previous night my makeup artists hadn’t said a thing about the multiple scratches and bruises from my fall out of the tree, and I’d managed to wrap my ankle tight enough to be able to dance.

I honestly didn’t remember landing on my ankle, but the walk home from the park, wearing Nanette’s bag as a pseudo pair of leather short-shorts, had been excruciating.

I hadn’t told Nanette about my ankle or the lump on the back of my head. It had been my choice to climb the tree, and I took full responsibility for my actions.

We only had a couple of days left to get our video finished, which was why I found myself limping to Nanette’s apartment at noon. She’d offered to come to my place, but I was afraid that Abigail, who had helped me sew Nanette’s bag back together and was becoming restless, would find her way up and play matchmaker all day. So I’d suggested we do it at Nanette’s.

Thick, dark clouds hung low in the sky, trapping the humidity and in general making the day more miserable than it needed to be. The scent of rain filled the air, but I never trusted clouds to do what I thought they would. Especially in New York.

My phone buzzed and I pulled it out to find an email from my stalker. I rolled my eyes and opened it.

David,

I saw the play again. You were magnificent.

“Yeah, yeah,” I muttered before I kept reading.

You’re getting very friendly with the clarinet player. You know she’s not good enough for you, right? You deserve so much better.

I scowled at my phone. Who was this crazy person to tell me Nanette wasn’t good enough for me? In all truthfulness, I probably wasn’t good enough for Nanette.

I could be that someone. Expect a little something from me soon.

XOXOXOXO

I’d only answered the stalker once or twice before, mostly to thank her for her kindnesses. Now I felt like I needed to draw a line, so I typed as I walked.

While I appreciate the compliments you’ve offered me, your messages have become increasingly antagonistic toward how I live my life so I ask that you discontinue any contact between us.

David

I read through it once before hitting the send button. When I realized how close I was to my destination I was able to leave the stalker behind and focus on the day ahead.

Nanette had given me the code to her building, so I punched it in and jogged up the six flights of stairs to her apartment. Not because I needed a workout—I’d beat Jerry hands down this morning rowing—but to try to burn off some of the nervous energy that buzzed through me.

Thoughts of the previous day kept parading through my mind, leaving me longing to see Nanette again. The fact that she’d sprinted away and forcibly stopped a food truck for me filled me with appreciation, and maybe something more. We’d laughed
