Chapter 17

I kept my eyes toward the stairs and waited to see if Zhen was coming down, but I did not see her, so my eyes went to the elevator and she was not coming out. I walked to the foot of the stairs and called.

“Zhen?” I did not get a response. “Zhen!”

I ran up the stairs instead of taking the elevator and opened the bedroom door. I saw Zhen sitting on the bed crying and I walked over to her. I put my finger under her chin and held up her head. She was crying but there were no tears.

“Why don’t you have any tears?” I asked softly. “And why are you crying?”

“I don’t have any tears because I never had a reason to cry before. Maybe my tear ducts are blocked,” she said and I caressed her face because, although there were no tears, I could still feel her pain. “I’m crying because I could not take you with me, which means that I can’t lead you away from danger.”

“I am not worried about you saving me, Zhen. I’m worried about what you would do to save me. There was a warning on that paper. It said that you should never fall in love. The person who left you there knows what you’re capable of and that is why you’re here and not where your parents are. Maybe they were trying to protect their world from who you could be, so maybe I’m the danger to you and not everyone else.”

“You?”

“Yes. I’m the detonator.”

“Baby, kiss me,” she said and I knew that she was scared. I sighed and lay my head on her shoulder because I was too worried about her to enjoy a kiss with her right now. “It’s okay, Maggie. We just need to take it one day at a time. Just know that if something happens to you, it’s not because I wouldn’t do everything in my power to save you.”

“You don’t have to tell me that, honey. I know,” I said and caressed her face, and now it was time to give her that kiss.

I gently touched her lips with mine then kissed her sweetly. I loved her so much. She could not see anything other than to keep me safe, and ironically, that was all I could see for her. Zhen got up and held my hand then she led me to the elevator. We went down and she took me to the car.

“Movies?” I asked with a smile.

“Yes, but the same theatre we used to go to.”

“That’s in Queens.”

“Too far to drive?” she asked.

“No. I love driving you,” I replied then we got in and drove out of the garage. I had armed the house so that no one would be inside waiting for us when we returned.

It was three o’clock in the afternoon and the sunlight had turned Zhen’s eyes a beautiful mixture of blue and orange, and her smiles made them even more interesting, unlike when they turned orange whenever she was mad.
