The words saddened Jude for reasons he didn’t understand, but he kept the conversation light. “So even your king couldn’t go without a guardian?”

“Aye, and as the king does not believe in the veil, he would never think to make such a journey.”

“What? How do you not believe in something that actually exists?”

“The veil is….” Eoin searched for the words. “The veil is as alive as you or I. It allows or denies passage for reasons we know not.”

“That makes no sense. You’re saying it’s like a portal that works when it feels like it.”

“Aye, and that is why the king does not believe. If I told you that something was there, and when you went you could neither see the evidence nor touch it, you, too, would cease to believe.”

“So the veil works only sometimes. We might not be able to make it back.”

“You belong there; so you will always be able to journey back.

I will be with you, so I, too, will return. But others…. The men who followed me through the veil when you first came upon me, if should they try again, I doubt that they would be able to follow.”

“Why?”

“I know not.”
