Even early in their partnership, a sexual vibe was always there. Why not? He was hot, she was hot. She obliged him one night and she wasnât even high. They were watching a movie at his place, sitting almost on top of each other, his arm around her, his hand on her thigh. The movie went by like a cement wall taking a walk. The tension got so extreme she couldnât stand it. Damn, he was hot and damn, she wanted him naked. Whatâs wrong with him? Whatâs he waiting for? She regretted saying thereâd be no sex. âIt screws up everything,â sheâd told him. He had on sweatpants and she could see the outline of his boner. He was being respectful in spite of his condition. Another reason to like him.
âTo hell with it,â she said. Eli looked at her.
âWhat?â
Eli was a triple gold medalist in bed. He took charge, the way she liked her sex. He had stamina, technique, sensitivity, he knew when to speed up, slow down, stop. He had a gift for talking dirty. He let you know how you were doing too. She jumped him whenever they had ten minutes together. Their relationship was intense but liberating. They told each other everything. People say that but they really did. They talked about people theyâd screwed and screwed over, and what they really thought about their friends, their families, the importance of greed and ruthlessness, about hurting people and feeling nothing that resembled guilt. About who theyâd like to kill. Cody thought Eli was trying too hard, always talking iron will, his fearlessness, his do-or-die attitude about freeing himself from Tato.
One afternoon, they were at his house, sprawled on the bed, listening to Fall Out Boy and smoking some very good bud.
âYou know, I tried to kill Tato once,â Eli said.
âYou what?â she said.
âWith a sniper rifle.â Eli began a long tale about Tato and the crew frequenting an outdoor bar called the Place. They were there nearly every Friday night. Tato tipped extravagantly and always got his favorite table; on the railing so he could see the world go by.
âYeah, but what happened,â Cody said, impatiently. This had to be bullshit.
âThere was a building under construction two blocks away,â Eli said. âThe view from the roof was perfect.â He said he took a rifle from the gangâs armory, a TAC, something with a complicated scope. He started explaining some crap about one click was a quarter of an inch at a hundred yards.
âEliââ she said.
âLet me tell it my way, okay?â he said. He told her heâd cut the lock on the security fence with a bolt cutter and got up on the roof. âIt was a perfect shot. I could see the bar, no problem,â he continued. âI looked through the scope and there was Tato, holding court as usual, the crew pretending he was funny. What a bunch of suck-ups.â Eli said he rested the rifle on the balustrade and got comfortable. He checked the windage.
