“Thank God you’re back,” Brandy said, rushing toward me as soon as I stepped into the pub.

I looked around, trying to figure out what the emergency was. I spotted Justin seated at one of the large, round tables with several locals. He had out his notepad and he appeared to be questioning them.

“Justin’s here,” I said, realizing I’d just stated the obvious.

“He sure as heck is.”

I frowned at my friend, not understanding her disgusted tone. “What is he doing?”

“Stalking me,” Brandy stated, shooting a wary glance over at the table.

Justin listened with the woman to his right, then made a note on his pad. He wasn’t paying any attention to Brandy, which didn’t seem much like stalking to me.

“He isn’t stalking you,“ Oliver said, joining us.

“Okay,“ I said slowly. “Let’s try this again. What exactly is going on?“

“Brandy has her knickers in a twist, because it turns out that her mother actually bid on Justin for her.”

Brandy nodded, her lips pursed in disgust. “My own mother sabotaged me.”

I was even more confused. Why was that a big deal? Brandy knew Justin. She liked Justin. It wasn’t as if it would be that big of a hardship to go out on a date with him. But honestly, that was besides the point. I was trying to figure out what Justin was doing speaking with all those people.

“But that isn’t the big news,” Oliver assured me.

“Oh good, maybe now we can get to the real issue,” I said. “You two made it sound like the Cuban missile crisis.”

“It's big news to me,” Brandy muttered and crossed her arms over her chest.

I patted her arm sympathetically, then turned my attention back to Oliver. “So, what’s the big news?”

Oliver's eyes lit up, and he leaned in, clearly ready to share some juicy gossip. “So, that really hot guy that bid on you…” He paused for dramatic effect.

“Yes?”

Great. Was Oliver about to tell me that Mr. gorgeous was the one who murdered Roscoe? Did the people that Justin was interviewing see the whole thing go down? That would be just my luck.

“Well, get this,” Oliver’s eyes glittered with excitement. “The guy that bid on me is that hot guy's brother.”

He stopped, and waited for my reaction.

“Cool?” I asked, not sure what he wanted my response to be.

He stared at me as if I was utterly clueless. Then he said, “We could soon be dating brothers.”

“Oh.” I said as if finally realizing what this was all so amazing. “Right. Sweet.”

Oliver still looked disappointed with my reaction.

“This is all very exciting news,“ I assured them. “But I got a text from Dean saying something was going down here and he made it sound kind of like, you know, it might be some sort of illegal activity. In fact, he was the one who suggested that we might need Justin to come over here.”

I trusted Dean’s assessment of the situation much more than the two of them.

“Likely story,” Brandy mumbled, eyeing Justin suspiciously.

“Oh, yeah.” Oliver glanced over at the table where Justin made more notes.
