CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Maggie pushed the office door open with her hip, a to-go cup in each hand. “Ferrow?” she said, not looking over her shoulder. “Hold my calls.”

The naga gave her a disbelieving, amused look. “What calls?”

“Ha, ha, very funny.” Maggie stuck her tongue out. “I wanted a suitably dramatic entrance line.”

“Well, then.” Ferrow crossed the room and took the cup Maggie offered her. “You brought tea, and you made an entrance. That must mean it’s planning time.”

“Bang on.” Maggie put her cup on the coffee table and took off her coat, then tossed it on the back of the couch and sat, picking her coffee up again. “I have no idea what I’m doing, I’m running myself around in circles, and it’s past time I settled on a plan of action.”

“Right. Do you want to start with assets and liabilities, or what we know and don’t know?” Ferrow sat across from her and crossed her ankles, sipping the tea.

“As much as I love a good Princess Bride reference, I think it makes more sense to list what we know,” Maggie replied.

“I’ll keep the big cloak in the closet then.” Ferrow smiled. “All right, Mags, hit it. What do we know?”

“Let’s start with James. He’s a turned vampire. We don’t know when that happened or how long his indentured servitude lasted, but from Cole’s age, I’d guess somewhere in the neighborhood of a couple of decades. He’s wealthy and well-connected. We don’t know how much magic he knows or whether he has other magicals in his employ.”

Ferrow nodded. “We also know he travels quite a bit, and he’s a huge Dallas Cowboys fan.”

“Could be a prime opportunity for bribery.” Maggie snickered. “Okay, Cyrilla next. She comes from a matriarchal line of sorceresses, and her magic is matter manipulation. She’s trained it very well and in a multitude of different fields. She’s very creative. She has a master’s degree in chemistry, too.”

“I don’t think you told me that,” Ferrow mused. “Bit of an odd choice. Surely she had a life lined up for her, and judging by her powers she didn’t need any extra training there.”

“I suspect you’re right. I think the chemistry degree was a personal choice—it’s certainly been to her benefit.” Maggie gulped some coffee and continued, “She’s known for dealing with threats to female sorceresses, sometimes in less-than-legal ways. Some people view her as a protector, some a murderer.”

“And everything in between,” Ferrow pointed out.

“Definitely. Now, the connection between them. Twenty-five-ish years ago, boy meets girl. Some amount of falling in love occurred, but a love potion is alleged to have been involved—or at least has suspected involvement.”

“Have you seen any signs of love potions or other black magic philters in your visits to Manor Antonietti?”

Maggie shook her head. “I haven’t, but that doesn’t mean they’re not there. I’ve been in a grand total of four rooms in that massive house, and none of them were anything approaching an alchemy or potions chamber. Also, based on what I know of Cyrilla, I wouldn’t be surprised if she made her potions in a straight-up chemistry lab.
