Chapter 15

Frank’s car was parked in the driveway when I got home. I was glad because I felt like I hadn’t seen Katherine and Robert in weeks, though it had really only been one--albeit long--day. I opened the door and Frank greeted me with a warm smile. My kids came over and gave me a big hug.

“Mom, are you okay?” Katherine asked.

I saw the worry in their faces and knew Frank must’ve told them what happened. “I’m fine, you guys. Don’t worry. A terrible thing happened to Uncle Charles but the police are going to find out who did it, and that person will go to jail. I’m just going to be busy helping Aunt Mary through some tough times for a little while, okay?”

“Of course, Mom,” Robert said.

“What you guys have been up to?” I asked.

“We went to see Peter Pan. It was amazing,” Robert told me.

“Yeah, it was good, Mom.” Katharine said. “At first, I thought the movie might be a bit juvenile but it was really exciting!”

“I’m glad you guys enjoyed it. I want to hear all about it at lunch. I’m going to make fried egg sandwiches with some canned ham. I hope you guys are hungry,” I said.

“Always, Mom,” Robert reminded me.

“Great, why don’t you both go enjoy the sunshine and I’ll call you when it’s ready.”

“Okay, Mom,” Katharine said and she and Robert headed into the backyard.

When they were outside, I started preparing lunch. Frank had surprised me a few months ago, renovating the kitchen. It was so contemporary, complete with turquoise cupboards and speckled grey Formica counters. It sometimes cheered me up just being in the bright surroundings, but not today. Frank asked how I was really doing but I didn’t want to worry him.

“Good,” I said too cheerily, “I learned a lot today. I’m confident we’re--I mean the police--are going to find the killer.”

Frank’s look of concern was back. My idea to stay positive backfired. It seemed to make him worry more. “You learned a lot about what? Are you meddling, Izzy?”

“No, of course not,” I said. Not really, anyways.

Lunch was made in no time and I sat down with Frank and the kids for a nice meal. Before I went out again, we all spent some time playing a few card games. I knew I was going to be busy over the next few days so I wanted to make sure I had time with my family so they didn’t feel neglected. I could tell the kids were worried about me since there was not one single complaint about how long it took me to strategize my hand. It was a good tip to remember for future game nights.

Later in the afternoon, I called Mary’s house and briefly spoke to Mrs. Collins. She said both Ava and Jo were taking a short rest as ordered by her. I told her I would be by the house shortly and headed out.

When I arrived at Mary’s, it was quiet. Ava and Jo were still sleeping.
