After a quick lunch at a diner I hadnât been to in at least fifteen years, Anna and I head back to the station. The diner was exactly the same from what I could remember. I think Mom might have taken me there a few times. I recalled the brown wainscoting that was on every wall, but nothing else. Anna, for the most part, sat silent for the meal, seeming just to enjoy the food. I found myself in the strange position of being the one that had to steer the conversation; but she seemed just as happy sitting in silence as she did when we were discussing the case. Sheâs a strange sort of person, not like Zara at all who would have been chatting away the entire time. But she emits this ethereal sense of calmness that only a therapist can, I suppose. Regardless, I find her presence comforting.
Back at the station, we manage to look up both Connor and Mac Griffin using the DMV database. Macâs license expired in 2016, making me think he probably moved to another state. However, Connorâs is still active, and gives his current address on the east side of town.
As weâre making our way back out of the station, we see Hodge getting out of his car, headed our way. His face contorts when he sees Anna. âWhat are you doing here?â
âDidnât the chief tell you? Sheâs assisting me on the case,â I say.
âAssistingâdoing what?â His face looks like heâs smelled something bad.
âIâm providing my professional and practical experience in helping Emily track down Jessicaâs killer,â Anna says, proudly.
âBut this is my case,â Hodge says.
âReyes told me you were busy with the fires. Have you already wrapped those cases up?â I ask.
He shakes his head. âNo, it looks like theyâre going to be more complex than we thought. As far as we can tell, at least two of those fires were set on purpose. We may be looking at an arsonist working in the area. I donât have to tell you this isnât the best timing.â
âSounds like you have your hands full.â I try not to sound patronizing, but Iâm finding it a little difficult after Hodgeâs whining.
âItâs nothing I canât handle, but obviously the Ashford case has to go on the back burner while we investigate who is setting these fires. So I guess itâs a good thing that youâre here.â
I nod. âI guess it is.â
He doesnât say anything else, only gives us a resigned look before heading into the station.
âYou think he resents us for working on this case without him?â Anna asks.
âI donât really care. As far as Iâm concerned this is our case now. And I would really like to wrap it up before Hodge decides he canât sit on the sidelines any longer.â We head back to my car, but I notice Anna giving me a strange sort of look. âWhat?â
âYou donât like working with local police officers, do you?â
I sigh. âI never set out to be that way.
