The Republic of Georgia is a small country sandwiched between Russia and Turkey and borders the Black Sea to the west. The Caucasian Mountains stand to the north, while the Armenian Mountains bound to the south. The Republic of Georgia is slightly smaller than the state of South Carolina and has a population of about 4.6 million. This Mingrelian story comes from the Samegrelo region of the Republic of Georgia. At one time, the Mingrelians believed in wood spirits and other pagan deities. Tholiorko’s shamanistic ability to understand the animals reflects the story’s pagan roots.
