But luck was still not on his side. Remember how Seward was recovering from a broken jaw? His doctor had made a metal and leather brace for his chin to help him heal properly. When Powell tried to stab Seward, his knife couldn’t get all the way past the brace. Powell’s attack was ferocious but not fatal, and by this point, he had been slowed down enough that the police arrived to arrest him.

After the action was done, five men had injuries, including Seward himself, but the only death that night was President Lincoln at the Ford Theater. The murderous conspirators were tried and executed for their part in President Lincoln’s assassination, but Seward healed from his wounds and continued his work in government.

The couch where Seward breathed his last breath is still here at the house in Auburn, as are many reminders of the incredible man . . . and of his friends, too. Many spirits have been seen in the house, but one stands out: the ghost of a black woman, leading another ghost toward the house until they both disappear from view. It’s rumored to be the ghost of Harriet Tubman, helping other spirits to safety just as she did in her time on Earth, bringing them into her ally’s house so they can finally find peace.
