Chapter 30
Iâd only been awake about a half hour when Tristan knocked on my door.
âDo you ever sleep?â I asked, squinting at him in the morning light as I stifled a yawn.
He grinned and walked past me into the cabin.
âRarely. Get dressed. I want you to see something.â
âGood morning, Tristan.â
âGood morning! Now get dressed. I have to work this afternoon, so our timeâs limited.
I looked at the clock. âWhere on earth are we going that we wouldnât be back before afternoon?â
âYouâll see. Letâs go. Have you eaten anything?â
âUm, no. I just woke up. Iâve barely finished my cup of coffee.â
âI want to take you to lunch while weâre out, but itâs gonna be a while, so you might want to grab something.â
I yawned again and pondered how anyone could have so much energy in the morning.
Iâd taken a shower before bed, so I took down the messy knot of hair on top of my head and braided it loosely down my back, threw on a pair of shorts and a tank top, and with a banana and a granola bar in hand, I was ready to go in record time.
It was a gorgeous day for a road trip, and I couldnât help comparing the real life experience to the soft focus montage Iâd played in my head before.
Tristan was in a great mood, laughing and talkative, asking me questions about my past travels and offering up stories about his.
Most of his adventures had been army-related, and I learned he had entered the service when the war with Iraq broke out in 2003 as part of the military police, but quickly moved into extensive training as a special agent in the US Armyâs Criminal Investigation Command.
âMy grandfather, Hank, had been CID before he left the army, so it was a big deal to me to follow in his footsteps.â The pride he felt for Hank was evident in his voice and the exalted way he spoke of him.
âIs that the man in the pictures at your house? With the hat?â
He grinned and nodded. âOne and the same. And one of a kind. They broke the mold when they made Hank Porter.â
âYou were close, huh?â
âOh, yeah. From the time I could walk, I was his shadow. My brothers and I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, what with Mom and Dad both working long hours and all. But me and Hank had something. I donât know. We got each other, ya know? On a level I donât think he ever had with Jay or Holden.â
âIs he the reason you became a deputy?â
He looked at me with shock that it would even be a question. âWithout a doubt! There was never anything else I wanted to be. He bought me a hat like his when I was five, and as far as I was concerned, I had already been deputized.â
âWere you a deputy under him as sheriff?â
His smile faded and his eyes turned wistful. âNever had the honor. I was going to.
