Next stop, they called at the metal factory, but Lee Davison was out at the time. Rather than wait around and waste the next couple of hours, Sara decided to give Stacey and Tina a call. Stacey was free to see them and worked at an estate agency in the centre of Hereford. Sara pulled up outside and waved at the young woman who was expecting them. She came out to see them and climbed into the back of the car.

“Hi, you wanted to see me about Bonnie. Is she okay?”

Sara twisted in her seat to look Stacey in the eye when she broke the sad news. “I’m so sorry, Stacey. Bonnie’s body has been found.”

“Oh shit! What are you telling me, that she’s dead?”

“Unfortunately, yes.”

Stacey covered her face with her shaking hands and broke down. “No, this can’t be right. Not Bonnie.”

“I’m afraid she’s been formally identified. We had to break the news to her parents. They informed us that you and Tina were out with Bonnie the night she went missing. Are you up to speaking with us? We have a few questions regarding that night.”

“I don’t know. Her death has hit me hard. God, how did she die? Can you tell me? Christ, it wasn’t the taxi driver, was it? Fuck!”

“We don’t know it was him, yet. We’ll know more when we receive the post-mortem report, which should come through later today. Her parents told us that you and Tina left her standing at the rank, is that correct?”

She glanced up, and her mouth dropped open then slammed shut again. “You’re not suggesting that she died because we left her alone, are you?”

Sara tutted. “No, and I apologise if that’s how it came across, that wasn’t my intention. Before you separated, did anything untoward happen during the evening?”

Stacey closed her eyes and sighed. “Yes, at the pub. We ran into that fucker… her ex-boyfriend.”

“Lee Davison?”

“You know about him?”

“We know of him. Bonnie’s parents gave us a brief rundown of their relationship. Care to tell us more? Was Bonnie scared of him?”

“More than that, she was terrified of him. We all are. He’s got several screws loose.”

“Was he with anyone else that night?”

“No, he was drinking at the bar, alone, like the saddo he is. He saw us, watched us walk in and take a seat at the table. He turned on his stool and kept staring at us. The guy behind the bar tapped me on the shoulder when I nipped to the loo and asked me if we felt uncomfortable. I told him yes, but what could be done about it? The barman told me that he would deal with the issue and asked Lee to leave. He was seething, threw a few punches, and in the end two members of staff plus a couple of male customers lent a hand and forced him to go.”

“Oh heck, did he hang around?”

“Yes, he stood outside for ages, peering through the window at us. The barman came over to check if we were okay, and Bonnie started crying.
