** ** **

Jodie and Laura sat on the long sofa, watching and waiting for a response from Ainsley, who was wedged between them. When she’d emerged from the bathroom, creeping through the house in an attempt to avoid Eddie, Jodie and Laura had been waiting. They’d ushered her straight into the living room, taking a seat opposite the stone fireplace.

For the next hour, they’d talked and Ains had been given no choice but to listen. Jodie had started first, telling Ainsley a possibility existed that a human could be an Eros, asking her if she was willing to give up on that chance. Laura punctuated this with reminders of how miserable Eddie was.

Once they’d ascertained Ainsley understood all that had been said, they told her about Eddie’s mother. Ainsley’s eyes had grown enormous when she realized that Jane-Lynne Pirini was in effect, just like her. She still hadn’t said anything. Her mouth kept opening but no words came out. Her brow would crease and then her lips would press shut before going through it all again. She’s trying so hard. Jodie sighed. She wants to fix this so badly but I don’t know if she has it in her.

Eddie’s face peeked around the corner, upon seeing that no hysterics awaited within, he stepped into the room. “Hey…”

“Come sit.” Laura instructed.

“Laura!” Ains gasped, shrinking back against the couch.

“Babe, if my being here is going to upset you, then I’ll just go.” He said, his expression weary. “I just wanted to tell you that I talked to my Mum on the phone. She said if it will help you to understand and get your head around all of this, she’s happy to talk to you.”

“You told your mother I freaked out?” Ainsley’s cheeks burned. “Omigod Eddie, I’m so embarrassed!”

“Sweetie it’s a good thing,” Jodie said in a gentle tone, rubbing Ainsley’s shoulder.

“Let us help you Ains.” Laura cupped her hand over Ainsley’s smaller one.

Ainsley sighed. “Why does this have to be so hard?”

“It doesn’t have to be.” Eddie’s voice quieted but did not discount the emotion lurking behind it. “Babe this is killing me, I just want things to be right between us again. I’m sorry this didn’t turn out the way you thought it would, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t find a way to move past it. Come and talk to my Mum, what have you got to lose?”

“At least listen to what she has to say,” suggested Laura. “It’s okay to be scared, but you have to have all the facts before you make any decisions about anything.”

Ainsley took a travel pack of tissues from her handbag, extracting one to blow her nose, face dipping as she tried to compose herself.

“Please don’t be upset Ains.”

Jodie looked up at Eddie, the pain in his words more than evident. Sucking in a deep breath, she turned her attention back to Ainsley. “Look, why don’t we all go? Will you do this if Laur and I come too?”

A brief pause followed, but Ainsley finally nodded.
