I want to say that I lost consciousness. Most of me did. Yet somehow a fragment of awareness remained. That fragment felt things â the strangest sensations. It also⦠almost remembered something critically important, but the thought kept slipping away.
That fragment of consciousness was aware of where I was taken â to the Drift. For that fragment of consciousness had never left the Drift and never could. It was that scrap of my soul that remained in my true homeland â the homeland of all the frozen witches.
The experience of being taken through the Drift couldnât last. I arrived on the other side in the land of the gods.
As soon as I did, that scrap of awareness gave way to unconsciousness.
I couldnât tell how much time passed, but eventually I woke. I was on a carved stone floor. It was cool and hard as it pressed against my cheeks. Unlike the concrete floor of the building Iâd just left, it thankfully didnât smell musty.
Something was in front of me.
I could barely tilt my head as chains locked me in place with the force of a shipâs anchor pressed against my back.
A pair of impossibly shiny boots stopped half an inch in front of my nose.
I twisted my head as far as it would go until my eyes reached the manâs face.
It was the god with the violent violet eyes, the shoulder-length brown hair, and the physique that could punch through an asteroid.
I wanted to describe the smile that spread across his lips. I couldnât. As I saw it, a part of my mind shut down due to fear.
âYouâre awake. You have roused much faster than I thought your feeble human body was capable of. Perhaps you are beginning to remember what you really are?â He tilted his head down to face me, that smile growing.
I didnât answer. I didnât want to acknowledge his presence.
I couldnât ignore him forever.
He shifted his hand to the side, and the chains holding me in place retracted. The magic disappeared.
Somehow, I rose to my feet. I say somehow because I didnât do it myself. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the crackling green magic that had once been the chains that bound me to the floor change. It expanded into a diffuse cloud, one that pushed me up until I stood just beside the god. Now I was on my feet, I appreciated just how much of an imposing figure he was.
I also appreciated how imposing his expression was as he continued to keep his head tilted down and that same smile pressed across his face. âDonât you have questions? Isnât that curiosity burning through you? Counteracting your ice?â On the words counteracting your ice, his lips changed. Though before heâd been speaking fluidly, smoothly â now his face appeared to seize up as if somebody had injected it with glue.
I still couldnât answer. My mind was reeling from being stolen away by time and space.
He took a step back and walked confidently towards the wall.
