Chapter 21

Everything was fuzzy as Toby gained consciousness. There was a low murmur, and it took him less than a heartbeat to figure out it was Gentry’s voice. What was Gentry doing there? The last thing Toby remembered was losing his shit in the conference room where they had been dissolving the only bright spot in his life.

For that matter, where the fuck was Toby? Lifting his lashes, Toby saw white sheets that he didn’t recognize. The blankets were tucked tight around him, as if someone had taken the time to cocoon him.

“I’ll let you know, MJK Pierson,” Gentry said when his eyes met Toby’s. “My mate and I need to talk.”

Toby was tired of talking. If Gentry wanted to review their separation papers again, then he could do it alone. Irritated and heartbroken, Toby ripped the covers off and sat up as Gentry slipped his phone into his pocket. Since he’d either removed his shoes or someone had done it for him, Toby looked around and found them next to the bed.

“Did you want something to eat?” Gentry asked, taking a seat on the edge of the mattress.

“No, I want to get this thing over with and go home.”

“Can you wait a few minutes before putting on your shoes and teleporting away?”

Although he was about ready to shove his foot into his shoe, Toby paused. “Why?”

“I’d like to talk to you.”

“It’s not one of our strong suits,” Toby argued. “Besides, you can’t trust a damn word that comes out of my mouth.”

“Please, Toby. I don’t think you want separation papers any more than I do.”

“That’s hilarious. You’re the one who filed them.”

Gentry sighed.

“I think we owe it to ourselves and to Fate to have an earnest conversation about what we both want, instead of assuming we know what the other is thinking or feeling. It’s nearly dinnertime. I’d like to order us some food.”

Although Toby didn’t know what was happening or why Gentry was being nice to him, he wasn’t opposed to having a conversation with him, so he nodded. Separation papers were the last thing he’d ever wanted, but he lacked so many things and had lied so much, Toby wasn’t sure he could avoid them.

Gentry dialed room service and ordered steak for them. It was Toby’s favorite meal, and he didn’t have to ask if Gentry had picked it on purpose. Gentry had a great desire to care for everyone around him, and he’d always made Toby feel special.

“It shouldn’t be too long,” Gentry said. “The hotel is full of fallen knights and sentinels planning on going downstairs for the buffet.”

“I’m sure your friends are expecting you to join them.”

“I already called them and told them I was with you.”

Toby snorted and leaned against the headboard. “I bet that went well.”

“I didn’t realize you believed they dislike you. They don’t even know you, Tobes. They care about me, and you know the past four years haven’t been easy.”

“I don’t know how to fix any of it.”

“I appreciate that you aren’t hiding behind those walls you’ve thrown up over the years.
