Note the shape and consider your eye level, as the perspective of a sphere can vary considerably. Having drawn the shape, place the petals – these can differ a great deal, as there are about ten flower head forms. Including buds and leaves can help your painting, but the central disc may be obscured by petals.
Colour palette
Painting a dahlia
1 Draw the petals, noting their shape and size and whether they curve in or out.
2 Start with an overall pale wash of Winsor red.
3 While this is wet, drop in a deeper wash of Winsor red and alizarin crimson.
4 When this is dry, indicate the shadows with an even deeper wash, noting the direction of light.
5 Paint in the centre using cadmium yellow.
6 Use a dark wash of brown madder to paint the sepals and stem.
