CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The bakery had only been open for half an hour when Agony entered with a yawn and immediately winced. Admittedly, she’d shot Baran, but her jaw was still sore where the bitch had slugged her. She bought a half-dozen donuts and hoped her partner would accept her choice without protest or questions. Maybe he would simply forget the patient’s aversion to the sweet ones and that he’d specifically mentioned this. Call me petty.

Baran was still drugged and asleep on the couch and Pain sat at the table playing against himself on a small and very used portable magnetic chessboard. She put the bag down a safe distance from the board.

“Well, at least you have a fifty-fifty chance of winning. I’m going to make a pot of coffee. Should it be for two?”

“Thanks, but I’ll hold off until I get in at least a couple hours of shut-eye. Let me know the minute she wakes up. She’s likely to be pissed and there’s no need for you to try to handle her alone.”

“I think I could handle her, especially since she’s wounded.” Maybe the bitch would give her the chance to finish the job.

“Everyone knows the wounded animal is often the most dangerous,” he replied logically.

She sighed. “I’ll let you know the minute she starts to stir.”

Pain headed to his bedroom as she wandered into the kitchen and started a half-pot brewing.

A little before nine—and with four donuts left—Baran began to come around groggily. The detective came out of his room seconds before Agony could summon him.

“Good timing,” she quipped. “Did you feel a disturbance in the Force?”

He snorted. “Listen to you getting all nerdy on me.”

Without further comment, he started a second pot and looked at what donuts were left. The good news was that two Bostons remained untouched. The bad news was that neither of the other two was plain. He fixed his best possible evil eye on his partner and she smacked her forehead.

“Damn! Sorry, I forgot.”

It was too early in the day to call someone out for being a liar so he didn’t pursue it. When the coffee finished brewing, he poured himself a cup and joined her at the table, and they noticed Baran watching them.

“I gotta piss. Which way is the bathroom?” She tried to stand but winced and sat again. “Shit! I may need a little help.”

Pain provided some assistance and held her steady on her feet as he guided her to the bathroom before he stepped out into the room and stood where he could keep an eye on the door.

“I hope you don’t keep any sharp objects in there.” She studied the chessboard idly.

“Only a double-edged straight razor, a hatchet, and a chainsaw. We should be safe.”

“I am not amused.” Oksana came out of the bathroom but waved him off and shuffled slowly to the donut bag, peered inside, and frowned.

“No plain?”

Pain covered quickly for his partner. “She didn’t know. I didn’t know she was going to get any so I didn’t have a chance to tell her.
