Chapter 19

Over the next several days, I rarely left Luke’s bed, although not in that way, unfortunately. Mostly I slept. I’d never slept so much in my life. I’d had no idea how exhausting head injuries were. I could hardly stay awake for longer than a couple of hours. Luke was awesome about it, the best boyfriend a guy could ask for, if he even was my boyfriend. That point wasn’t entirely clear yet. At any rate, he cooked for me and served me in bed. He watched movies and TV with me. He even read to me, which I was surprised to discover I enjoyed. He spent most of his time with me, although he also gave me space. He was on paid administrative leave while the department investigated the incident with Roger Tamsley—standard procedure, he said. Occasionally he left the house, to walk Jack or run errands or spend time with Gladstone or some of his other cop buddies.

He never left the house for longer than an hour without making sure someone was there to watch over me, usually Cherry. She didn’t even raise an eyebrow over the current arrangement, me staying at Luke’s house, in his bed. It was as though she’d expected it all along. She was solid, going to my shop to put up a notice that it would be closed for the week while I recovered from my injury. She even called all the customers with current tickets to let them know I’d been involved in an accident and that orders would be delayed. She claimed that none of them had a problem with it; everyone had been polite and concerned for my well being.

If not for the residual trauma, it would have been a thoroughly pleasant way to spend a few days.

By Thursday morning, however, I was feeling better and getting stir crazy. For the first time, I woke up when Luke did. While he went out for his jog, taking Jack with him, I snuck into the shower. He didn’t like me to shower while he was out, because there was so much potential for me to fall over and knock myself senseless again. While I understood his concern, I was tired of being babied. I wanted to do something for myself. Even so, I went slow, taking care not to make any sudden movements that could send me into a dizzy spell.

Fifteen minutes later, I emerged from the shower—clean—and without having caused myself further injury. Wrapping the towel around my waist, I went to the mirror to inspect my head wound. It looked a lot better, still red, but healing well, a long vertical gash just in front of my left temple. The bruising had faded from black and purple to green and yellow. It was ugly, but at least the swelling had gone down. I’d been keeping a bandage over it, but decided to go without it for the day, to air out the wound. After applying the antibiotic ointment to it, I moved on to the rest of my grooming.
