THE PHARAOH’S COMMAND

Intermittent clouds hung high in the sky. Occasionally, the sun shone bright, alone and unobstructed; at other times, a gray curtain was drawn before it, dampening its glow to match the marching army’s mood.

They were more, now. Evermother’s army had joined with Long and Redbeard’s, adding her own people to the mix. As they approached Mount Menace, scattered armies from both sides of this war combined, slowly forming into the massive behemoths that would soon and inevitably clash.

Evermother brought four Grandmasters: Egnor, Politok, Jotar, and Melhior. Coupled with the ones Long and Redbeard already had, their army now contained eleven Grandmasters, over a thousand Masters, and over twenty-five thousand Classed—without counting the black tattoo. There was also a sea of Unclassed barbarians walking along. Afraid of the invaders’ underhanded tactics, they had chosen to relocate their entire tribes.

It was a sensible move.

However, large numbers brought the burden of supplies. No matter how bare they stripped the earth, they just couldn’t feed so many mouths, and so Evermother had taken her army and marched in parallel with Long and Redbeard’s, a few kilometers to the side. They could cover more ground like that, securing more food and water.

In their desperate bid for survival, the barbarians scoured the earth like locusts, carving lines of death across the continent. Nobody was happy about this, but everyone understood the necessity.

As the people below trekked, Long sat cross-legged among the clouds. The winds rapped his body from many directions, changing randomly at the sky’s will, but despite them, his blue robes remained strangely serene. They only occasionally fluttered here and there, mostly remaining still as if unaffected by the howling winds.

This was Long’s latest way of training. Having gleaned some insight into Calmness, his sixth Mortal Dao, during the battle with Redbeard, he had chosen to put the extra ellipses aside for the moment and focus on mastering this Dao.

As the Pharaoh had once said, cultivation was important, but the Dao came first.

The winds moved around Long’s body, pushing clouds in this and that direction, but he focused on his Dao. Without using any qi, he tried to keep himself stable, utilizing his understanding to nullify the surrounding gusts. They weren’t unpredictable, not truly; they just moved in an incredibly complex pattern. And when one could understand this pattern, they would comprehend the wind’s movement, and through its movement, they could understand its calmness.

Long sat there for hours, undisturbed by anyone. As the sun reached its peak, the winds lessened, and Long could finally remain perfectly still in mid-air as if it wasn’t blowing at all. Then, when the sun slowly fell and the winds picked up again, Long’s calmness wasn’t disturbed, for he had become one with the wind, and its myriad flows were all within his gaze.

Long’s eyes opened, and they were as vast as the blue skies.

"Success…" he muttered, lost in the feeling. "Calmness… So, this is what it feels like."

When he’d seen Waymon in the vision, the God sat undisturbed atop a divine whirlpool and his eyes looked like this.
