The Symbolic Ba-gua
âBy nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart.â
Confucius
T he legendary emperor King Fu Xi (Hsi) discovered the ancient symbols known as trigrams in 3300BC. These trigram symbols represent great knowledge and wisdom regarding phenomena that affects life and the nature of the universe. They are mankindâs legacy handed down by the ancient sages, as well as the building blocks of all Chinese philosophy, the I Ching, Astrology, Mathematics, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Numerology, Martial Arts and Feng Shui.
These markings that were rearranged by Yu the Great created a symmetrical shape with nine separate segments. Each segment contained a specific number ranging from one to nine. The even numbers are considered yin, and are placed to the corners of the square. The odd numbers are considered yang, and are placed at the four cardinal points and the center. The numbers nine and one are considered the most auspicious since nine represents wholeness or completion and one represents the beginning of all things. The central square representing the number five is the most powerful, as it is translates as âwuâ for âmid-dayâ and âmyself.â The four quarters represent the four seasons and cardinal directions, while the four corners represent the inter-cardinal points. When adding the numbers horizontally, vertically, or diagonally they add to the number fifteen. This configuration was considered so auspicious that many countries such as China, Egypt, India, and Ireland built their cities with this configuration. The four quarters would represent the four quarters to a city and the middle square corresponded to the government building.
