“I would prefer even to fail with honor than to win by cheating.”

SOPHOCLES

Monday arrived quickly. The agents made their way to Yakov Yanis’s home at 11 PM. He took off his gold chain and handed it to the guy who was to fit the camera.

He was outwardly nervous and terrified of being discovered.

Gus placed his hand on Yakov’s shoulder. “Listen to me, you’re a tough man, not stupid either. You have a responsibility to yourself to do this, twenty years or five. Keep it in mind. Behave as you always have, and no one will be any the wiser.”

“He’s right,” Bill said. “You and Dan Perez are working with us now. I’ve already told Dan to behave as he always has. Under no circumstances talk to him or act friendly. Instead, you behave like the asshole you’ve always been. Get me?”

Yakov nodded.

Brian grinned at Yakov. “Don’t get the damn camera wet. Take the chain off when you shower.”

After the agents departed, Yakov consumed a half dozen nightcaps and collapsed into bed. He told himself, Twenty or five, twenty or five. He repeated it over and over until sleep overtook him.

Tuesday was the first drive of his camera. First, he made sure the collar of his polo shirt never interfered with his chain, and headed off to the gym at 5:30 AM.

Ricardo instructed Yakov to drive him and Perez the three-odd hours to Madison Square Garden to attend the weigh-in.

Dan and Yakov were to stay in a motel in separate units, and Ricardo would stay with Zervas.

When it was time to leave, Dan placed his gear in the trunk along with the others’ bags. Ricardo told Dan to sit in the back seat. Ricardo climbed into the front passenger side. With music playing softly, the journey commenced. They would arrive in plenty of time to check in and attend the weigh-in.

While driving, Yakov watched Dan in the rearview mirror. After a while Dan snarled, “What the fuck are you looking at, punk?”

“Nothing at all. That’s you, nothing at all.”

Ricardo told them to cut it out, and the journey continued.

After settling in their motel, the time soon came to attend the weigh-in. Yakov was to accompany Dan, and Ricardo would meet them there. Neither talked while alone in the car.

Dan’s opponent was a show boater who wore glittering pewter trunks and a Native American chief’s headpiece. He beat his chest and hollered as he put on a show for the cameras. Dan was not intimidated. The guy, who called himself “Eagle Chief,” was from England. His name was Evan Collins—probably too dumb, Dan thought, to realize his boxing name was an insult to the true Native Americans. He was a year younger than Dan. However, he was shorter than Dan, which gave Dan a more extended reach. Nevertheless, their weight was identical and within the bounds of the rules.

The press snapped the obligatory photos, and Dan and Yakov returned to their motel rooms. The next evening was fight night. It was to be streamed live on TV.
