Chapter 17
IT WAS SATURDAY AND Steve was working overtime on his serial killer case at the new FBI headquarters near the Portland Airport. I called and arranged to meet him for lunch a few blocks away at Daveâs Famous Barbeque at the Cascade Station mall.
He was sitting in a wooden booth with a police report, ignoring a plate of half-eaten hot wings when I joined him.
âSo, am I back in your good graces?â he said, not looking up.
âDepends,â I answered.
âI donât have any time this afternoon, but . . .â He laid the report on the table and grinned at me.
âYou have a one-track mind,â I said. âI wanted to meet you because I might have a lead in your serial killer case.â
âDoes this have anything to do with your Facebook theory?â His eyes dropped to his report and he flicked a page.
âIn a way. But itâs completely by accident. I was reading a Facebook post on a different case and I sort of stumbled upon something.â
He kept reading.
âA missing white female adult. She met a guy at the bar last night and ditched her friends without a word. She didnât show up for work this morning and her companions found her car where she left it at The Outrigger.â
âThe Outriggerâs in Vancouver.â He squinted at his report. âNot my jurisdiction.â
âJanet Domingo lives in Portland. She works downtown. She missed work and her friends havenât heard from her. Sheâs been missing for fifteen hours now and her friends are worried.â
âDoes she have a family?â
âThey live back East. I donât think they know anything about her disappearance.â
âShe hasnât been gone long enough unless thereâs a reason to believe sheâs in danger,â he said.
âYou and I both know thereâs not a required wait time before the police can start looking for a missing person,â I said.
âYou and I also know people get distracted and forget to call their friends and family.â He pushed the report aside and winked at me. âSometimes they even run off and get married without telling anyone.â
This was one of Steveâs not-so-subtle hints that we should run away and tie the knot. Iâm not so sure about our relationship so I ignored his comment.
âMy gut tells me thereâs something wrong here. If you wonât . . .â
âSettle down. Do you have her friendsâ contact information?â
âYou will follow up on this?â I jotted down the names and numbers of Janet Domingoâs fellow clubbers from my notes.
âIâm busy this afternoon, but Iâll give it to one of my detectives. Youâre not making it easy for me. Weâll have to call the Vancouver PD and get them involved and theyâre going to have the same reservations I do.â
âYou can tell them itâs a priority case.â
âThereâs an FBI liaison over there. Iâll let him know it might be related.â
âThanks.â I stood and gave him a peck on the cheek.
âIs there something else?â he said. âYou seem . . . somewhat agitated.â
âThere is something nagging at me, but itâs kind of complicated, and I donât know if I can explain it to you right now.
