Chapter Twenty-Nine

Desmond had not been there this time.

They had wandered the streets of the artisan district for a while, but they had not found any sign of him, nor had they found anything that suggested to them where he might’ve gone. They wandered through the district for a little while, buying some food, looking at some paintings, listening to some performers, generally enjoying themselves and the quiet of the night around them. It was a nice, and uneventful, evening. By the time they headed back to the dorm—where Dax slept on Rochelle’s floor again—they were both tired.

When he woke up, he did so to a strange drumming sensation.

Dax had thought that it was in his dreams, and when he had been drifting, there had been a part of him that felt as if he were back in the forest, talking to the silk shatter, feeling the earth essence coming off the creature as it drummed its massive legs together. But this time, it seemed to attack him.

When he sat up, he did so slowly, rubbing at his eyes.

There had been something that awoke him, though Dax wasn’t sure what it was. Maybe it was just a memory of what he had been through, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that it hadn’t been a dream.

Earth essence. He was certain of it.

He sat for a moment, looking over to where Rochelle was laying on her strange bed in the middle of the pool, her hair dangling off the side of it and nearly into the water. If he had rolled any closer to the bed, her hair would’ve tickled his nose. Getting to his feet slowly, he slipped his essence blade into his belt and headed toward the door to the room.

As he pulled it open, Rochelle stirred, looking over at him. “What are you doing?”

She rubbed her eyes, looking as if she wanted nothing more than to roll over and go back to sleep.

“I felt something and can’t really sleep, so I’m going to take a walk.”

“You know what time it is?”

“Not really,” he said.

She let out a sigh, and she rolled to the edge of the bed, sitting up for a moment. “I don’t either. But you said you felt something?”

“It was probably just a dream,” he said.

“Probably. But this being you, and with your attunement to essence, I don’t want to just let ‘probably’ be the answer,” she said. She looked over at the pile of clothes she’d left in the corner from the day before. “Turn away.”

He did as she asked and gave her a few moments, and then she cleared her throat, giving him a chance to turn back around. She now stood completely dressed, carrying an essence blade of her own.

“You don’t even know how to use that,” he said.

“Well, I know that, and you know that, but anybody else we might encounter won’t know that. So if nothing else, it might be helpful to have another weapon.”

“There’s not going to be anything out there,” he said.
