The aftermath of the catastrophe

In two days, Vesuvius had claimed a considerable number of victims. At Pompeii, it was an estimated 10% of the population (2 000 people, out of a population of approximately 20 000 inhabitants) and, in the region, a total of between 10 000 and 20 000 deaths. The landscape was apocalyptic. However, the stupor was short-lived and the city of Pompeii, which was only covered in two to three meters of volcanic debris (compared to twenty in Herculaneum) soon saw the arrival of both its residents who had fled and looters, looking for abandoned treasures in the destroyed houses. But the Emperor Titus had the rubble guarded. Gradually, nobody was interested in the field of ruins anymore when nature asserted its rights once again. The place was renamed Civita (meaning “city”), until its rediscovery and identification in the 18 th century.
