Unexpected encounters

When she came back to her senses, she was lying on a cold stone floor in complete darkness. Her hands and feet were still tightly bound and swollen. Her back hurt and her whole body was covered in bruises. But she was alive. Where was she? She carefully summoned some bluecaps. The blue flames danced around her wrists, eating up the rope around them. A few moves and she was free. She dared to summon more light and looked around. As she feared, she was on the other side of the Gate. The silver chalice, which they used to enter the Lost Lands, glittered in the blueish light. She buried her face in her hands. Her next chance to go back was by the next Equinox - that was in almost two months! By then Amredyll would be dead and Benyssa would be queen, or the Swamp Dweller will get to her first, and do unspeakable horrors to her in order to extract the secret of opening the gate. She realized that she cannot stay here. Last time the fantom was able to follow them here despite the protective wards placed on the wall. She had to get away as far as possible from the swamps, but the way out was leading through the heart of the menace. And yet this was her best chance - if she could cross the marshland quickly, without attracting attention, and perhaps make it to the house of Doctor Bartholomew… Maybe they can study Eugene’s map thoroughly and find a solution? Faint hope warmed her heart. “I am strong, I am resilient, and I am able to handle whatever life throws on my path” she whispered to herself and stood up, despite the protests of her bruised body.

Pixie was the one who raised the alarm on the next morning. The disappearance of the ambassador was the talk of all court. Many shrugged and thought that she had decided to return home on her own volition, after all she belonged to another world. Amredyll and Queen Oona were the only ones knowing the risks that her presence on the other side of the gate posed. Worried and full of remorse, recalling their last meeting, the prince made his way to the Queen’s Tower. It was early in the morning and knowing his mother’s habit to sleep late, the ladies in waiting were still in their rooms. Some glittering object on the floor, right in front of the turret stairs caught his attention and he picked it up. It was the ruby pendant that Adriana was wearing the previous day, supposed to contain the evidence of Benyssa’s plotted treason. A worried wrinkle appeared between his eyebrows, and he rushed to his mother’s chambers. As expected, she was still in bed, but immediately recognized that something was troubling Amredyll. He told her about Adriana’s suspicions and her disappearance. Oona was listening attentively and didn’t ask any questions. He handed her the ruby necklace:

“Your magic is stronger than mine, Mother, and you can read the memories of the crystals better than me.
