We were walking back toward the platform where we first entered when Riley stopped and started staring out of the clear walls into the water beyond. He cocked his head and started reaching out toward me before he spoke.
"Veera, what's that?" he asked.
I turned and looked back to see what he was looking at and saw a series of shadows just at the edge of the light. The longer I stood there watching the more shadows I saw until there were clouds of dark shapes swirling around the compound just out of the reach of the light.
"Lady Veera, I have a very bad feeling about this," Kierra said from just behind me. "What is that?"
"I'm not sure but I think we need to find out. You two stay here and keep your eyes open."
I ran back to the water door I had locked earlier and put the torc around my neck. A quick touch and I was out and moving through the water as fast as my magic could propel me, until I was finally close enough to see what was moving in the dark waters of the cove.
I turned tail and shot back toward the door as fast as I could, flanked by swimming figures armed with coral tipped spears and wearing seaweed as clothing. The Sahuagin might have been dangerous inside the dry corridors of my compound but out in the open water, I was on their turf and I was sorely outmatched.
I did the only thing I could think of - something really stupid.
I turned and continued moving backward as I threw out my hands and cast the first spell that came to my mind. A tremendous bolt of lightning shot from my hands and charged the water around me, shocking the fish-men and slowing them down.
Unfortunately, it had a lot more effect on me as I started convulsing. My muscles locked up with several thousand volts of electricity. If I had been swimming instead of using magic to propel myself through the water, I would have been dead right there. They would have caught me twitching in pain and killed me.
I hit the door just ahead of a cast spear and dropped to the floor with a chunk of sharpened coral stuck in my shoulder.
As soon as I fell out of the doorway, Kierra stepped in front of it and planted her shield in the opening, ordering it to stay in place. The first of the nasty creatures hit and was stopped dead by its impact with the immobile shield. I could hear their frustrated screams from outside the entrance, but the shield kept them from making it inside.
Riley was on his knees with both hands on my shoulder.
"Hold still because this is going to hurt."
"Shiiit!" I screamed as the jagged shard was ripped out of my flesh with a wet sound.
He immediately tore off a piece of his shirt and pressed it to my open wound to stop the pumping blood from covering the floor.
"My blood," I said through gritted teeth.
