Katherine went to bed early that night and woke up feeling refreshed. She could feel a weight lifted off her shoulders, but not enough to fully relax just yet. She got out of bed and took a long shower. After showering, she made a big breakfast of eggs, bacon, and a large stack of pancakes. While eating, she thought back to her conversation with Marianne. She knew Marianne was a good friend to her and she should hold onto that connection for as long as possible.

When she finished her last bite, Katherine heard her phone ring. She rummaged through her pocket and read the caller ID.

“Hi, Mom,” she made out after gulping down some apple juice.

“Hi, honey. How’s the case going?”

“Fine enough. It really started taking a toll on me though, so I had to take a rest. Marianne suggested rest and a big meal for now, which I did.”

“Oh, good. I’m so happy to hear you’re taking care of yourself,” Katherine’s mother let out a sigh of relief, “After our last conversation, I’ll be honest, I was pretty worried about you.”

“Mom, you don’t have to worry about me. I have Marianne, and she’s really been helping me through this investigation. She’s been with me since the beginning, and I’m very grateful,” Katherine replied. She felt bad for making her mom worry. If she wasn’t so caught up in her work, maybe she could’ve found time to call her mom and update her on the investigation.

“Well, anyway I called because I wanted to ask if now would be a good time to stop by,” Katherine’s mother inquired. “I know we talked about a visit last time we were on the phone, and I just so happened to get a day off tomorrow. Would you mind?”

“Of course, I don’t mind! You can even stay for a couple of days if you want to,” Katherine waved her hand excitedly, “I can always make time for you, Mom. I’m sorry I didn’t reach out earlier.”

“No, I understand, sweetheart. You’re living out your dream and you want to make sure it goes right. I’m so proud of you for working towards that. Anyway, I’ll be coming by sometime after lunch, and as far as the next couple of days, I can ask my boss and work something out. I can’t wait to see you!”

“Can’t wait to see you too, Mom! I’ll let you go pack and get ready.”

“Yes, I’ll do just that. I’ll see you then, dear. Love you,” Katherine’s mom made a kissy sound over the phone.

“Love you too, Mom,” Katherine responded with the same kissy sound and hung up the phone.

Katherine surveyed her home at a quick glance. She noticed all kinds of paperwork around each inch of the cabin. She thought that now would be a great time to clean out the mess and start anew. After gathering her plate and her cup, she started washing her dishes. There weren't a lot of dishes since she had been mostly snacking in between researching.
