Liam and I stayed in the cave until well past dark. We eventually figured we should get dressed and return home before everyone started to worry. By the time we arrived, Imogen and Jonah were already asleep, and Julian and Esis were curled up in the corner of the room.

That night, I had the most incredible dream.

I walked through the halls of a large house. It reminded me a lot of Liam’s house back on his family island, but it was laid out differently. There was all sorts of Hawkei art on the walls, including the exact collection of arrowheads that hung in my grandparents’ house.

In the distance, I heard the sound of a child calling, “Mommy! Mommy, come look!”

I opened the front door, and from the sky flew a beautiful beast— a red dragon with a rider on his back. I couldn’t see his face from here, but the rider had long black hair and wore regalia worthy of a chief.

“Look out the window, pumpkin!” I called. “Your daddy’s home.”

I startled awake that morning. Liam must’ve already left for work, because neither he nor Julian were anywhere to be seen. He must’ve said goodbye to me, but I’d been too tired to remember. By the silence in the house, Imogen and Jonah must’ve left as well.

Esis stretched from where he’d slept on my belly. He patted my stomach, and in that moment, something hit me. I sprang straight up in bed.

What day was it? How many periods had I missed now?

I’d accepted it wasn’t going to happen, but what if…?

Esis eyed me with a sympathetic expression.

“You know something, don’t you?” I accused.

He just kept looking at me without responding.

I took a deep breath, and my hands began to shake at the thought of taking a pregnancy test. Holy crap. Was I really going to find out today if I was pregnant? I’d been in denial about it for weeks. The thought of having a baby, right now, in the middle of a war, was just too… scary.

The weird thing was, the thought didn’t scare me anymore. Now that Liam and I had gone through the cleansing ceremony, everything felt different. If I was, if I wasn’t— it didn’t matter. Because Liam and I would be fine either way.

“I guess it’s time to start being honest with myself,” I spoke aloud to Esis.

He nodded firmly.

Liam deserved to know if his baby was growing inside of me, and I wanted to find out, too. I stood from the bed and ran my hand over my belly. It hadn’t really changed, but I swore there was the smallest bump there. Maybe I was imagining things. I didn’t want to get my hopes up. But I was finally ready to figure out for sure.

Esis and I took the short walk to the convenience store to pick up a pregnancy test. I was so jittery that I practically ran all the way home. I fumbled with the package for a few moments in the bathroom, and nearly dropped it.
