Chapter Nineteen
Astral Projection
A WEEK PASSES WITH the same routine as my Covenmates work to heal from the Battle of Mentis. Groups gathered at meals are smaller now, and it took me longer than it probably should have to learn how many witches we lost recently. Even though I didnât personally know any of the fallen, I remain solemn on the subject, and I know Willow is taking it hard. She hosts another vigil, similar to the one for Ignis, and this time, we go around the room and let everyone say a few words.
Unlike last time, however, I stand on the outside of the group, watching but having nothing to contribute myself. Iâve surprised even myself by attending, because also unlike last time, Willow didnât urge me to be here. I chose to be here.
Mentis was never my home. I didnât know any of the lost witches by name, with the exception of Larc and Lavina, but from the pictures Willow hangs up at the ceremony, I recognize a few of the Elementals who had faced me in combat at some point. Itâs a shame that I never actually got to know them as anything other than my enemies, because now I never will.
Itâs odd how this place, which I once viewed as a prison, now feels like home, how the people who had been out for my blood now rely on me to help them. And how sad I feel for the recently deceased. Thereâs no bitterness, no anger toward me, as if Iâve been here all along. I can hardly remember my life before the Councilâs intervention, and maybe thatâs for the best. Sometimes, maybe the best thing we can do is forget.
With the tension still lingering between me and Willow, these people are the closest thing I have to a family anymore, and if Iâm being honest with no one but myself, Iâm glad theyâre past the point of icing me out. That thought brings a strange trill down my spine, which I canât name as acceptance or disappointment. The Elementals donât hiss insults under their breath anymore, but thereâs still a coldness in their eyes whenever Iâm near, and Iâm unsure if it will ever truly go away.
Theyâll never fully trust me.
I try to distract myself by working alone on my new Aens powers. Iâve utilized the breathing techniques Sabre taught me, but manipulating the air still comes as a struggle. I havenât found a shape that works the best for me; my powers are strongest when I let them simply blast out of everywhere at once.
But Sabre said thatâs dangerous, and I agree.
With a sigh, I stare at the ceiling and raise my hands in the air before me. Kado lifts his head up off his paws and runs his tongue lazily over his lips, watching me. I sigh and bring my hands just a bit closer, staring at the empty space between them, concentrating all my energy into moving the air, sweeping it into a tiny ballâa miniature windstorm.
