DANNY

Next morning he meets Nikki on the walkway. It is becoming a routine. Tracey is with them but she doesn’t say much. She feels uncomfortable playing gooseberry. Nikki chatters away for a few minutes then the conversation falters.

‘Something wrong?’ she asks.

‘I found out,’ he says, ‘about the Stores.’

Nikki and Tracey exchange glances. ‘How do you mean?’ ‘I mean,’ says Danny, ‘I know Steve Parker torched it.’ Tracey’s face drains of colour. ‘I wouldn’t go round saying

that,’ she exclaims.

‘Why not? I’m not afraid of him.’

Nikki puts her hand on his arm. ‘Danny, you shouldn’t go round asking for trouble.’

‘I’m not. I’m just telling the truth.’

‘You don’t know that,’ says Tracey. ‘Nobody knows who started the fire.’

‘You’ve all got a pretty good idea though, haven’t you?’ The two girls lower their eyes. ‘Go on then,’ says Danny, a hardness entering his voice. ‘Tell me he didn’t do it.’

That exchange of looks again.

‘There’s something else, isn’t there?’ asks Danny. ‘Don’t be silly.’ Nikki looks away. ‘Nikki?’

‘You may as well tell him,’ says Tracey. ‘He’s bound to find out anyway.’

Danny feels a hard thump in his chest, like when you swig an ice-cold drink on a hot Summer’s day.

‘I went out with Steve,’ says Nikki, still not meeting Danny’s eyes.

‘Oh.’

Suddenly she is in a big hurry to explain. ‘It didn’t mean anything, Danny. A couple of dates, that’s all.’

Danny puts a hand on her shoulder and backs her towards the railings at the end of the walkway. His dark eyes shine like obsidian. ‘You went out with him.’ He takes a gulp of air. This boy who hardly gets out of breath running distance can barely breathe. ‘Knowing how he thinks.’ He turns and starts to run. Nikki starts to follow, but Tracey grabs her arm.

‘Let him go, Nik.’

Nikki shakes her off and shouts after him:

‘Danny!’
