Alyssa was sitting at the table in her sitting room, arranging scraps of wool and felt in the wooden box that had been Digger’s bed on the Sea Eagle but was too small for the growing pup now, when Jerrik came in and plopped down on the sofa.

“Good afternoon, husband,” she said, smiling up at him.

“I thought we agreed to taking small, careful steps,” he said, kicking off one of his boots.

Alyssa’s smile flattened. “You heard already?”

Jerrik nodded and kicked off his other boot as Digger stuffed his nose into the first one. “Ermelinde found me at the stables.”

“Ermelinde was in the stables?” Alyssa let out a low whistle that had Digger pulling his head out of Jerrik’s boot and standing at full alert.

“She was yammering in my ear about you freeing thralls before I even set foot on the ground.”

Alyssa stood and stepped over to Jerrik and knelt at his knees. “It was a rash decision on my part, I admit,” she said. She placed her hands on his thighs. “But the woman rubs my fur the wrong way. She is arrogant and condescending and talks to me as if I were a child.” She gnashed her teeth and actually growled. “I swear I bite my tongue ten times a day to keep from sticking it out at her like some petulant little girl still in side braids after she has pointed out yet another of my failings as queen.”

Jerrik cupped Alyssa’s chin and lifted her gaze to his. “I know she can be arrogant and condescending. However, she is the matriarch of this family, this city, and has been since my stepmother died five years ago.”

Alyssa nodded. “I know. I do. I respect her for all her years and experience. The problem is, she does not respect me. At all.”

“She will,” Jerrik assured her. “In time, she will see what I and so many others see in you.”

Alyssa smiled, his words soothing much of the sting. “What do you see in me, my lord and husband?”

Jerrik chucked her chin. “A feisty little lynx who will fight to the death for those she loves and has sworn to protect.” Alyssa nipped at his fingers and Jerrik chuckled and pulled her up until she was straddling his lap. “No more freeing of thralls until we have established our rule as king and queen. Promise?”

“Promise.”

“Good. Now give your weary husband a kiss. I have been listening to farmers speaking of crops and livestock all day while dreaming of your sweet lips.”

“These lips?” Alyssa teased. She wiggled suggestively on his lap and then plied him with feather-light kisses until he pulled her hard against his chest and took her mouth with his.

A good while later, as they both lay sated and spent on the sofa, Jerrik glanced over at the box on the table. “What are you doing with Digger’s old bed?”

Alyssa sat up and pushed her tangled hair behind her ears. “Hamar said there’s a litter of kittens fully weaned in the thralls’ longhouse.
