As Raven slid the phone back into his jacket pocket, a rickety old Land Rover that looked like it would be more at home on a farm track turned into the car park and drew to a spluttering halt alongside Raven’s BMW. The M6 may have been seventeen years old, but the Land Rover was even more ancient. Jess jumped out, giving the door a good slam behind her. ‘Sir.’

As ever she was bright and cheerful, even though she’d been dragged into work unexpectedly on a Saturday morning.

‘Morning, Jess. Good of you to give up your weekend. Hope you didn’t have anything planned?’

‘Nothing important, sir. Just a long walk with a friend.’ Her attention drifted to the line of CSI vans parked outside the brewery. ‘I needed to talk to you anyway. A woman came to the station last night looking for you.’ A pink flush crept into the young detective’s cheeks. ‘That is… I mean, your wife, sir. She said–’

‘No worries,’ said Raven, saving her from any further embarrassment over the matter. ‘I’ve already dealt with it.’

‘Okay, good.’

That ought to have ended the discussion, yet Jess stood waiting, her manner suggesting more than a passing interest in the arrival of the mysterious stranger from the South. Not to mention a curiosity to explore the uncharted waters of Raven’s marital status.

She would have to stay curious, however. Raven was done talking about Lisa.

Another vehicle came into the car park. A blue Ford Focus, with Tony at the wheel. He parked neatly behind the Land Rover and got out.

‘Morning, sir.’

Raven nodded his greetings. He now had a full complement of his team, such as it was. It was time to go inside and start work. The three detectives pulled on their crime scene coveralls and went into the brewery.

There, the CSI people were busy, moving around the ground floor and along the walkway that spanned the upper level. Holly Chang was standing by the body and Raven decided it was best to tackle her before he did anything else. He’d already dealt with his wife that morning. How much worse could an encounter with the diminutive head of CSI be?

Quite a lot worse, if previous experience was anything to go by. Even though Holly reached scarcely five feet in her head-to-toe one-piece, the CSI boss packed a punch much greater than her physical stature.

He braced himself for some well-directed sarcasm or a round of complaints.

She looked up as he approached. ‘Ah, DCI Raven. Good morning. Or I daresay it would have been if this hadn’t happened.’ She indicated the body of Marcus Earnshaw, which was still lying where Raven had found it. Photographed, searched and examined, but otherwise undisturbed. ‘Buggered up my weekend lie-in, that’s for certain.’

‘Well,’ parried Raven, ‘I’m sure he’s having a worse day than either of us.’

‘So far,’ returned Holly darkly from behind her face mask.

Raven knelt down beside the body. As he’d observed the previous night, Marcus had apparently fallen from the metal walkway that spanned the upper level of the brewery.
