Chapter 8: Going back down.

Jonas watched from the porch as Bill’s familiar car turned into the driveway, crunching gravel under its tires—a reassuring sound that told him Bill had arrived. He felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety; today's conversation could change everything. Christie, sensing his tension, gave him a reassuring kiss before retreating into the house to keep their new friends, Boali and Tillu, from being noticed from the outside.

As Bill’s car came to a halt, he stepped out, the afternoon sun casting long shadows behind him. “Good afternoon, Bill,” Jonas greeted, trying to keep his voice even.

Bill, in his typical straightforward manner, took a seat across from Jonas at the rustic outdoor table and didn’t bother with small talk. “OK, spit it out,” he said, his voice firm and expectant.

Jonas hesitated for a moment, then pushed a heavy, metal box across the table towards Bill. “There's over $300,000 worth of gold in there,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Bill’s eyes widened as he lifted the lid, his gaze locking onto the gleaming coins inside. “You said 30 or 40 lbs,” he murmured, astonished.

Jonas nodded, his face serious. “And there’s more inside,” he added, hinting at the depth of the hidden cache.

Bill looked up, his expression turning inquisitive. “Why come to me with this?” he asked.

“Honestly?” Jonas paused, needing to choose his words carefully. Bill nodded, prompting him to continue. “You’re the only one, besides Kelly and Christie, that I trust,” Jonas confessed.

Bill chuckled, shaking his head slightly. “I’m a cop, for fuck’s sake,” he remarked, half in jest and half in disbelief.

Jonas leaned forward, his gaze intense. “And you’ve always been honest with me,” he countered.

“You mentioned you know a guy,” Jonas pressed, noticing Bill’s hesitation.

Bill sighed, a sound of resignation mixed with understanding. “Yes, he’s a lawyer, and his brother deals in special jewelry and gold,” he explained.

“And you trust them?” Jonas probed, needing to be sure of every step they took.

“I’ve known him for 40 years, and his brother too” Bill affirmed, his tone firm. “He might be a little unconventional, but he’s always straight up. If I tell him to treat you right, he will,” he assured Jonas.

Jonas, his curiosity piqued, ventured further. “And if you tell him we’re talking about 40 lbs of gold and over a thousand gemstones, with more possibly to come?” he asked, laying all his cards on the table.

Bill’s expression turned serious, his frown deepening. “You said that, now I have to ask—where does all this come from?” he inquired, his tone mixing professional duty with personal concern.

Jonas took a deep breath, knowing this was the moment of truth. He had to trust Bill, not just as a law officer, but as a friend. “It’s a long story,” he began, his voice steady. “Let's just say, the house came with a few unexpected treasures hidden in places you wouldn’t imagine.”

As Jonas spoke, Bill listened with a mixture of disbelief and curiosity. He had heard about hidden treasure, but a hidden world right under Jonas’s house was a step further into the surreal.
