CHAPTER 27

As Laura pottered around the kitchen, her mind was whirring. The meeting with Claudia Wright had gone as well as she could have hoped, but there was part of her that worried that by going to a newspaper she was opening a can of worms that might have terrible ramifications for her and her family.

Claudia wanted Laura to go on the record with all that she knew but she had explained that she needed time to think about the ramifications of that. However, she also knew that as a proud police officer, she couldn’t rest knowing that Sam’s death had been a result of corruption in the MMP. She owed it to Rosie and Jake to find out why their father had been taken from them, and to ensure the people responsible were held accountable for their actions.

‘Is there anything you want on this food order?’ Rosie asked as she wandered in looking at her phone.

Rosie’s relationship with food had always been tricky and uncomfortable – though thankfully it had never developed into any kind of serious eating disorder – but ever since her abduction, she had been increasingly particular in what she ate… to the point of obsessiveness. Laura knew that Rosie’s need to feel in control was a reaction to what had happened to her, and unless it became detrimental to her health, she’d decided she wouldn’t mention or challenge her daughter’s demands.

‘Let me have a quick look,’ Laura said, reaching out to take Rosie’s phone to look at the family’s online shopping order, which Rosie had now taken control of.

Rosie smiled. ‘Don’t you trust me?’

‘No,’ Laura joked and then reached out a comforting hand and put it on her shoulder. ‘I’m kidding. I just need a few toiletries, that’s all.’

‘Jake wanted some hair gel so I added that,’ Rosie explained.

‘Hair gel?’ Laura raised an eyebrow in amusement. ‘Who’s he trying to impress?’

‘I don’t know,’ Rosie replied with a shrug. ‘But he does keep mentioning a girl called Hannah in his class.’

‘Does he now?’ Laura said, feeling her heart warm that Jake might be getting his first crush but also the pang that came with it, knowing that he was growing up. She scanned the list and frowned. ‘What’s Matcha?’

‘It’s powdered Japanese green tea,’ Rosie explained.

‘It’s what?’ Laura laughed.

‘Good for memory, brain function and energy. And loads of other things,’ Rosie replied.

‘Well I could definitely do with some of that then.’

Hearing the front door close, Laura knew that Gareth had arrived. She felt a twinge of anxiety. Having met with Claudia, it was more important than ever that she come clean to Gareth about everything to do with Sam’s death, Butterfield and what she suspected about Pete. She still wasn’t sure how he was going to react, but she would take it in her stride.

Laura handed the phone back to Rosie. ‘Looks great to me, darling.’

Rosie frowned. ‘What about your toiletries?’

‘Oh, next time,’ Laura said as she went to talk to Gareth.

He looked exhausted.

‘Jesus, I need a beer,’ he said.
