The Grand Master knelt beside his bed with his knees cushioned on a pillow, his face was buried in the quilt on the bed and his arms were outstretched above his head. He appeared to be asleep in this unlikely position, but he was actually in a self-induced, dreaming trance state.
In his dream he saw Simonâs garden in Markâs backyard. The six-pointed star made of flowers with the ominous, dark stone in the middle, stood out clearly. At each point of the star stood a Knight of the Temple in full dress armor, each holding a raised sword. Between each of the starâs points and closer to the center stood six more Knights of the Temple, also in full dress armor with lances. They all faced the center where a great red serpent with the wings of a dragon coiled around the altar as if ready to strike. In front of each Knight was one of the Kabbalistic symbols of the twelve zodiacal signs. Only one Knight had no sign in front of him.
The pink and white lilies, purple amaranths and blue violets were in full bloom, yet snow lay around the flowerbeds on the ground.
As he watched, he seemed to circle about the garden as if floating and he noticed the presence of many smaller figures on the outskirts of the flowers in the snow. These seemed to be children, but each bore some sort of weapon: bows, lances, clubs, swords, daggers. Beyond the children were numerous musicians beating drums and playing pipes and lutes and other instruments unknown to him. The music was fast-paced and intense. A swirling storm of black clouds or shadows played about the head of the red dragon.
One of the Knights left his station near the sign of Aries and stepped directly in front of the dragon. The serpent reared itself and puffed up its chest. It struck out at the Knight, exhaling a long, streamer of red-orange fire. The Knight fell to his knee and raised his shield to ward off the flames. Another of the Knights stepped forward to distract the dragon and the same thing happened. This pattern continued until all the Knights but one had confronted the beast. The dragon raised its head once more and prepared to strike again. The vision vanished. DâBrouchart raised his head from the bed and looked up at the canopy over the bed.
This was what he had been praying for, a vision. A sign. But now he would not have his Seneschal to discuss it with. He would have only the Ritter and the Ritter had very little knowledge of such mystical things as the Kabbala and the Zodiac. John Paul would be more likely to understand this vision. And the vision, which he assumed had been in answer to his prayer concerning the prophet, could not very well be discussed with the prophet, could it? Would it be wise to consult with the object of the dream?
He got up slowly and his knees popped.
