“Where the fuck are ya, Adelyn?” Khan asked once I was fully manifested in this fantasy dream land of ours. I had tried to look into how and why this was happening with us, but I came up pretty empty handed, especially with everything else that needed my attention in the waking world.

“I’m in Dahlia’s room.”

He lifted an eyebrow. “What’re ya doin’ there? Is she okay?”

I shrugged. “We lost another family member today, Sam, and she took it really hard. I walked in on her curled up on the floor, in a state that I never even could’ve imagined her in. Once I comforted her, she asked if I could stay to help her through her night terrors, and I said I would. Lilly’s here too to help.”

“She would take Sam’s death hard,” he said quietly. “I’m glad you’re there for her, Addy. Those night terrors are really no joke. I once saw her try to take on one herself, and she was laid up in bed for a week. Thank God her father wasn’t alive for that, or he woulda beat her for being lazy like that.”

I harrumphed. The more I heard about Dougal Malloy, the less I liked the man and was glad I would never have to meet him. Unless, of course, there was an afterlife, but I would deal with that when that came about.

Khan wrapped his arms around me and held me close, pressing a kiss to my forehead.

“Thank ya for bein’ there for her when I can’t be.” He pressed another kiss to my cheek. “I can’t tell ya how much that means to me, Addy.”

His arms tightened around me. I wiggled in his arms until I looked up at him. There was something about the look in his eyes…

“What’s wrong?”

He glanced away. “Nothin’ really. I have people here who are takin’ care of me and tryin’ to help me. Ya have people there doin’ the same for ya. But with all that care and support and help, I’m still stuck on the other side of the fuckin’ world from ya, and it feels like I’m nowhere close to gettin’ back to ya.”

I lifted a hand to cup his cheek. He leaned into my touch and closed his eyes slightly.

“You know I miss you so fucking bad, Khan,” I whispered. “We’re lucky that we get to see each other in whatever dream world this is, but I know it’s not the same. And I know that it won’t be until I can hold you in my arms when I’m fully awake. I hope it won’t take much longer, but everyone’s doing their best. I will hold you again, you will kiss me again, you understand?”

He nodded, meeting my gaze once more. “Do ya,” he started, but his voice faltered. “Do ya mind if I just hold ya tonight, love?”

“I would love nothing more.”

I smiled and tucked my head under his chin, and we stayed that way until we both woke up to our real responsibilities.
