Chapter Five
The bellâs leather strap would fit comfortably around a sheepâs neck, but couldnât even serve as a wristband to Snap. Almond extended it with two long ropes and once the trinket had been secured under Snapâs chin, the dragon swung his head left and right several times to make it ring.
Peony also soon returned with a package of dried meat, and Juniper put it in her backpack, which had contained little more than her rolling pin before.
âItâs a shame the stories never linger on practicalities,â she mused as she hoisted it onto her back. âIt would make it so much easier to go on an adventure if they did.â
âMaybe they donât actually want to encourage us to go on adventures,â Violet pointed out. âConsidering that the heroes usually run into a lot of danger . . . â
âOr maybe long checklists would make the stories less exciting,â Holly said with a smile.
âEveryone ready to go?â Snap asked.
âNo,â Violet muttered.
âOh, come on. You of all people should feel good about this! Having an actual adventure will do wonders for your skills as a knight!â
âIâve had an adventure coming here, thank you,â Violet huffed. But he definitely didnât want to stay behind with the hermits, who all seemed to know each other so well. Heâd feel more lost here than out in the wild, however nice these people might be. And especially if they were being too nice. So he trudged slowly towards the exit of the cave.
Juniper shrugged on her coat and gave Holly her hat. âBetter not take off that scarf. Itâs pretty cold out there . . . â
âWe noticed,â Violet said grumpily. Even still inside, the draft made him cross his arms tightly over his chest to prevent himself from shivering.
âI was lucky Heath told me all about this place,â Juniper said. âHe often said that the temperature was what he loved most about Ynys. It seemed a silly thing to say on bleak autumn days, but now I think I understand what he meant.â
âBe careful when you go out,â Almond warned them. âThe melted snow is freezing again. It wonât be long until we have an ice slide.â
âReally?â the two snuggling women said in unison. Grinning widely, they let go of each other and ran over to look.
Iris stepped forward and pressed Juniperâs hand between her own. âSafe travels, and good luck,â she said. âGive our love to the spiders.â
