iden looked around and made a gesture that I recognised as sign language.

“Is this place warded?”

“yes,” I signed back. “but it may not be secure.”

He grimaced. “We need privacy.”

“bedroom?” I signed. “i had a spell put in there,”

He was looking mildly amused now. “Sure.”

“Your signing is all off,” he said, as soon as I closed the bedroom door. “No capitals.”

I rolled my eyes. “Is that the important thing here? How did you escape the fire of truth?”

“How did you?” he countered.

I shrugged. “I’ve no idea. I could feel the spell, but Selby just waved me through.”

Aiden gave me a brief smile. “I didn’t escape,” he said. “They caught me.”

I stared at him, not understanding before his spell caught and immobilised me.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “They put a spell on me. Mind control. It’s dragon magic. I cannot do anything to fight it.”

I felt a faint tingling even in my immobilised state. Someone was powering through my wards. But Aiden seemed not to realise it.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said. “But I’m… it’s like a programming. If I… if I catch a spy, I’ve to hold them… if you fight me, I may have to kill you.”

That didn’t appeal to me. But there was someone breaking in, and they had to be here only because of Aiden discovering I was a spy. What would they do to me? Kill me? That seemed likely. They already had Aiden spreading misinformation.

“The information you gave,” I said. “The reports you sent. Any of it true?”

“Every word,” he said. “They didn’t try to stop me from that. I don’t think they even know I’m able to contact my superiors. They never asked me. I told them I was compromised and that I should be terminated. My people. I was expecting to die tonight.”

I felt cold. That information was not in the binder I’d got. Captain Dalton wouldn’t have kept it from me. Which meant that she was never informed. Aiden’s superiors obviously thought he could be rescued, and they sent me in without telling me or my captain that Aiden was compromised.

“So, you have some will,” I noted. “Only, you can’t free me.”

He shook his head. “I can’t not tell them about you either,”

I would have nodded if I could move. “What are they going to do to me?” I asked.

“The same thing they would have done to me,” he said, resignedly. “I don’t think Cedric will let you be killed. Why did you break up with him anyway?”

“We had a one night stand,” I said. “What is there to break up?”

“Cedric seems to think it more,”

“That’s his problem,”

Even as I spoke, I was aware that Cedric was in my flat. The spell must be wearing off. It was a one-time spell, and according to the notes, it should have lasted longer. Unless the Atamendhen was stronger than usual.

Just my fucking luck.

The bedroom door opened and Selby walked in, with Cedric behind him. He looked pale and anxious as he saw me.

“What is this?” Selby asked, his voice frosty.
