Chapter 14

My fangs descended, and I fought like mad to keep my ass on the thick branch and my arms from ripping out of their sockets in an attempt to escape the skies-damned trap Kadoc had left me in.

My gaze focused through the trees, and my eyes slid over the creatures facing off.

A woman as big as Kadoc, with leather-like skin the color of ashes. Her lower-half was engulfed in a thick, snake-like tail that trailed out behind her a bit.

The dragon king stood opposite her, absolutely naked and completely turned on. While logic told me the erection was part of his plan to lure her in, the bloodthirsty beast I could be on occasion threw her head back and howled within me.

My teeth cut into my lip as my jaw clenched.

Kadoc’s pants cut into my arms as I wrenched them against the fabric, trying desperately to keep myself from fighting its hold—and failing.

“You ssspeak my naame?” the snake whispered. I felt the air change as her magic tainted it, but it wasn’t silky like mine was. It oozed like mud, the smell reminding me of the dust storms that had blown through the hollows on occasion, leaving my nose dry and my eyes gritty for days afterward.

“Wow,” Kadoc murmured. “The taste of your power is exquisite.”

His voice sounded odd.

Skies-dammit, I knew he wouldn’t be able to control himself when he felt her magic. He had ignored mine before, but hers was something else. Something darker, and older, and probably stronger.

I ripped my arms out of the hold of the pants, tearing my skin as I jerked them upward that hard. The scent of my blood tainted the air, but my heart was already beating wildly as the savage within me demanded I rip the Echidna’s eyes from their sockets and tongue from her throat for daring to use her magic to seduce my dragon.

My mate.

There was a sharp inhale from the Echidna, followed by a dark laugh. The scent of the magic in the air grew stronger, burning my nose and making me wince.

“What have you brought to play wwwwith me, drrragon?”

“Nothing more interesting than myself,” Kadoc drawled.

Bastard.

Maybe he wasn’t under her control after all.

My animalistic instincts were leading the show, though.

More blood drenched the air as I clawed through the fabric of Kadoc’s pants, tied tightly around my waist. My fingertips were bleeding, my nails breaking, but the beast in me didn’t care one single skies-damned bit.

The scent of Echidna’s power grew suffocating, but it didn’t affect me.

Kadoc’s snarl told me he felt it, though. And that fact only ramped my fury and lack of control up a few levels.

With a swift jump, I launched toward the ground. My feet hit the dirt, my fists clenched at my sides. Blood dripped through my knuckles, sliding to the dirt slowly.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

Time seemed to slow.

“Vvvampire,” Echidna hissed. Her deep red eyes, not a whole lot different than my own bright reds, seemed to stare into my soul.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

My blood continued to slip to the dirt.
