âDo you take this class every week?â I walked with Ingrid to the locker room after class. âAnd does it take you a full week to recover from it?â
Ingrid laughed. âIâm here most Saturdays. Kitâs great, isnât she?â
âI havenât exercised this hard in a long while. Actually, never. Kit really is a drill sergeant. She knows how to get your heart pumping and to take your breath away. I hope not permanently.â
âCome every week, and youâll see a difference in no time. Youâll feel great and have so much energy.â
âHow long have you been coming to the class?â
âSince October. I was working the concession stand at a football game with Kit and a few others and asked if anyone could recommend a good exercise class. It was a bit of a late start on my New Yearâs resolution.â Ingrid made a comic wince.
âYou kept the resolution. No need to admit you waited ten months to start it.â
We parted ways in the locker room. I took a quick shower and dressed and was glad when Ingrid accompanied me into the hall.
âDoes Kit always teach this class? Or does she alternate with other instructors?â
Ingrid pushed open the front entrance door. âThis is Kitâs class. No one else ever leads us.â
âSo, she was at last Saturdayâs class?â
âYes.â Ingrid stopped at the car parked two spots from the door and gave me a narrow-eyed look. âYou didnât come for the workout, did you? You wonder if Kit killed Brooke.â
âWell . . .â
Ingrid stunned me with her next remark. âI confess Iâve also wondered. I mean, who wouldnât suspect the rejected girlfriend?â
Her glance darted to the community centerâs entrance.
Here came Kit, her eyes shaded by sunglasses. âHave a good day, ladies. I hope to see you at next weekâs class, Robyn.â She walked past us to a car a few spaces beyond Ingridâs.
There was no warmth behind the invitation.
Though Kit walked out of earshot, Ingrid moved closer and spoke sotto voce. âI saw Kit and Frank together the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.â
âWhere?â
âIn the park, about an hour after class. I had a pickup at the dry cleaner across the street from Firemenâs Memorial Park. When I left, Kit and Frank were sitting on a bench in the park, having coffees. I thought nothing of it at the time. Exes can be friends. But itâs been on my mind since Brookeâs murder.â
âDid you tell the police?â
Ingrid bit her lower lip. âUm, no. Frank couldnât have done it. Heâs such a nice guy. Kit, well, I really doubt she killed Brooke, despite my wondering. Itâs circumstantial evidence. Iâm sure the police have questioned her, and if she is guilty, theyâll have more proof than one meeting in a park. If neither one of them is guilty, Iâd be adding to their grief, right?â
I understood Ingridâs hesitation to report people she liked and agreed the park get-together could be circumstantial evidence. I did, however, remember Eileenâs remark of how often people didnât report useful tips because they assumed the police already had the information.
