Problem Solving

If your dog jumps up, tries to grab the toy out of your hand, barks, pulls on your sleeve, or does any other obnoxious behavior, calmly put the toy behind your back. If your dog sits or lies down, present it to her again, in the same way you did before. If she waits patiently for two seconds, say “Okay,” give her the toy, and start gently tugging. If she grabs for it, put the toy calmly behind your back. Repeat this sequence until your dog waits for the toy without grabbing until you give her permission.

After several repetitions of this you will probably notice that your dog starts waiting patiently. She is learning that jumping, grabbing, barking, and so on make the toy disappear. Gradually, you can start increasing the amount of time that you would like your dog to wait patiently, from two seconds to three, then five, etc. and start playing. If she jumps or mouths you at any point when you are playing Tug, institute “Time Out,” which is described later in this chapter. (See “Time Out” on page 112.)
