Pugs were introduced to the Netherlands from China in the sixteenth century, thanks to the Dutch East India Company. According to legend, William the Silent, Prince of Orange was woken by the barking of his pug Pompey during a midnight attack by the Spanish in 1572. He escaped in the nick of time, and from then on pugs became associated with the House of Orange. The breed became popular in England when William III brought a pug with him during the Glorious Revolution.
