Chapter Sixteen

LANDON

Tip #16

Never let a vampire get Hangry. They turn into giant man babies and ain’t no one wants that.

It was getting easier. It was.

Then, something changed. I wasn’t sure what, or how, but after her Employee of the Month party something shifted and the delectable aroma of her blood was making it hard to think around her again.

It was making it hard to think of anything but her.

The juice boxes of blood that I purchased via mail order off The ‘Zon weren’t cutting it anymore, either.

I wanted her.

Her blood.

Her body.

I wanted every smile and joyful thought that crossed her mind. I wanted to hear her laugh every morning. I wanted to talk to her about the gods damned weather. Perhaps, I was going mad.

Even as a vampire I could not have her blood and her, I wasn’t even sure I could stop if I was to drink from her. It was already hard enough to stop as it was, and had been even harder since I had scented her. I wasn’t sure I would be able to restrain myself with her. Her scent was already too overpowering.

I slunk into the shadows of Snow City, the unfortunate name for a thriving ski resort community that had grown too big for its britches. Now, the ‘snow’ tended to mean something else and the transient community that supported it made for good hunting.

I didn’t like it, but if the juice boxes weren’t working I needed another option, hopefully one that wouldn’t lead me to order her another funeral barge of roses.

I pressed myself deeper into the shadows, letting the glow of the streetlamp that was the sole source of light in this alley wash over everything. The bars had let out long ago, all that was out this late were the people with nowhere to go, and those that would prey on them. Usually, I could drink a little, my venom leaving them blissed out and unaware of what had happened, but after scenting Kat it had been harder to stop. I had nearly drained that biker from the bar on accident, and had called an ambulance to pick him up. I didn’t want a repeat, but I needed to be prepared in case I couldn't stop myself again. I needed someone that no one would miss.

A cat mewed somewhere to the left, the sound echoing through the dark only to be followed by the sound of stumbling steps and the drunken mumblings of some poor man.

My back stiffened, knowing what I was about to do. I didn’t like it, but I had no choice.

I kept repeating that to myself as if it would somehow make it all better.

The scent of the man hit me first, trash and sweat and something that I was sure was vomit. It was rancid in my nostrils, my insides curling at the volatility of it. I was sure, a few months ago it would be fine, but now? Everything had changed.

Pushing down the disgust that was
