Will there be anything else, madame?” Keeping his eyes glued to the floor, Torbrick placed a humongous roasted turkey on our table. Juicy meat and cornbread stuffing spilled over the edges of the platter.

After dunking his head into a trough outside to remove the smell as per Avery’s instruction, the bugbear had delivered us a buffet of delicious food. Mashed potatoes and gravy, pistachio cream-filled pastries, and steaming buttered rolls. Torbrick had to slide an extra table over next to ours just to hold it all.

“Yes, Torbrick. I would like a carafe of pomegranate juice, please, and some of Carmen’s candy floss should do the trick,” Avery replied. “Have you tried it yet?” She tilted her head toward me.

Miles nodded eagerly.

“Oh, and I’d like a spiced cider while you’re out,” Carl added.

“Uh . . . uh . . . pomegranate juice, candy floss, and a . . . a spiced cider.” Torbrick scribbled the items on a crinkled piece of paper. “Very well, I shall be back in a jiffy,” he announced, studying his list. “Though might I just say . . . it seems an odd request for pomegranate juice. I doubt any business sells it and certainly not at this hour.”

“It’s the Festival of Bonnie Barters, Torbrick. I’m sure you’ll find a way,” Avery said, leveling her eyes at the beast.

“Yes, well, I meant no business around here,” he clarified, looking hopeful as he swirled his clawed finger in the air.

“Then I suppose you’ll have to venture farther north in the city.”

Torbrick paled. “North? What, with all that merriment and happiness going on all about? I don’t really want to . . .”

Avery cleared her throat. “Should I give you a reminder of what happens to bugbears who defy me?”

Torbrick hastily shook his head.

“Then scoot,” she demanded

Without another peep, Torbrick skulked out the door.

“This is amazing,” Vanessa said, slicing into a piece of turkey oozing with juices. “You didn’t have to do all this for us. I’m not complaining, of course.”

“Yeah,” Miles agreed, his cheeks crammed with at least three buttered rolls. “This has to be expensive.”

“Oh, it definitely is,” Avery replied. “But we won’t be paying, and neither will you. Not after how cruelly he treated you.”

“Okay, I just have to know. How did you do that?” I asked, swallowing a bite of turkey and wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. “Torbrick was terrified of you.”

“It comes with the territory,” Avery said, sharing a look with Carl. “Throughout our Quests, we’ve developed a reputation around these parts. Torbrick may be a slobbering idiot, but he’s no fool.”

For the next little while, we stuffed our faces with as much food as we could handle while Avery and Carl shared amazing tales from their adventures. They had seen it all, had been all over the map, and had slain many impressive monsters. Sea monsters, vampires, the Quavering Queen of the Wolves—that story had us all on the edge of our seats. Before they had been drawn
